I am working with the local chapter of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers to put together a workshop on color theory and finishing. I would be most grateful if you could pass this information about the workshop along to your members. The workshop is titled: Even the blotchy stuff: Staining and finishing wood without fear

It will be 2 day workshop designed to add clarity to the world of finishes and color theory. It will be at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art (MESDA), which is in Winston-Salem, NC Feb 8th and 9th. The workshop will be lead by Furniture Make and conservator Martin O'Brien.

Martin O'Brien is a furniture maker and conservator working in Winston-Salem. He is both excellent at his trade and also really good at making complicated matters understandable and approachable. In the workshop Martin will focus on getting folks who are leery of stains and finishes to feel comfortable finding just the right shade of brown.

Day 1: Color/Finishing Lecture and Demonstration: February 8th
- explore the world of color theory and finishes through lecture and demonstrations
- presentation of finishing recipes on woods such walnut, poplar, pine and mahogany will be explored.
- tour the MESDA collection to see how these techniques were used on various pieces of furniture that Martin has conserved.
Registration $75 includes: 2 day admission to Old Salem, and box lunch

Day 2: Hands-on color/finish workshop: February 9th
- participants experimenting with stains and finishes to expand their comfort zone.
- focus on staining and finishing hard to handle species and situations.
Registration $170 includes: lunch and finishing materials. Participants will be responsible for bringing 6 samples of their most challenging woods to finish (ideal size 6"x10" x1/2”). Space is limited.
