Drill Press Cabinet

I finally finished my Drill Press Cabinet. It was mostly based on the Woodsmith Shop design shown below:
187475

First the base was built using poplar and plywood.
187477

187478

Next was a platform to go over the mobile base. Both pieces are on wheels.
187479

187481

187482

187483

187484

187485

187486

187487

One of the modifications is a cabinet with a door that has "depth" for storage. This was a suggestion from Charlie. I'm glad I did it.
187488

187489

187490

Cabinets set in place on top of the platform.
187491

Next was time to paint. I used Dirk's (golfdad) painting recipe which was Sherwin William Pro Classic paint, Floetrol and water. Getting a good paint finish wasn't as easy as I thought it would be.
187492

187493

Trying to hide some defects/seams with filler before the next coat of paint.
187494

187495

187497

187496

Solid wood edge banding on the cabinet faces.

Next was the top.
187501

187502

Edge banding.
187505

Oops. A little mistake.
187504

That's better.
187506

The piano hinge left a bigger gap that I was expecting. It will only be visible from the back since it is covered by the top and the gap doesn't exist in the front.
187507

Screwing the cabinets to each other and the platform.
187508

Finish on the top. Looks pretty.
187509

The top in place.
187510

Fitting a door in place.
187511

Marking for the hinges.
187512

187513

My smallest router doesn't fit.....
187514

Hand tools to the rescue.
187515

187516

187517

Using a screw to make a dimple to locate where the metal disc should be mounted to mate with the magnet.
187518

Dimple created.
187519

187520

187521

Coming along.
187522

187523

Time to build some drawers:

Drawers are done.
187526

Setup to locate and mount the drawer slides to the drawers:

187528

187529

Drawers installed:
187530

Drawer fronts
187531

Method to flush trim edge banding with the tablesaw.
187532

Making sure all the drawer fronts fit in place.
187533

A small repair with wood filler and dye.
187534

Applying finish.
187535

Drawer front install.
187536

Installed drawer pulls.
187537

Just need to load it up with stuff at this point. I like the mix of wood and paint.

Superb job Jeremy and a very nice Photo Essay of your build. Way too elegant for my shop, but I also like to paint my cabinets to give them a better look. I have a Floor model delta and most of the hardware to build one like yours; all I need is a kick in the butt!

Jeremy, that is one heck of a beautiful cabinet and your pictures of the details associated with the build are awesome...all of the details and precision made me feel like I was once again looking a "Norm's" craftsmanship!

GREAT job Jeremy! and I would have to say I think it is better than "Norm's" craftsmanship! but with all that work - why did you buy handles? I would have like to see what you came up with!!!

Thank you everyone for the kind comments. It was a fun project and a nice way to get back into the swing of things after taking time off to build the workshop.

For whatever reason making your own handles seems daunting to me. I do kind of like the look of the metal hardware at the same time. Plus it is super convenient. :)
