I have some wall paneling that I'm looking to darken. It has 2-3 coats of lacquer on it and I really don't want to strip it. Oh, and I also don't have spray equipment to tone it. Does anyone have any other suggestions on what might be compatible? I was thinking some kind of gel stain, but they seem to be urethane-based and I'm not sure if that's a problem. Is there such a thing as a lacquer-based gel stain?

Lacquer can be tinted. and then applied over the existing coats.
A dark Shellac on top of what you have then a seal coat of lacquer?
You could try a glaze and then put another clear coat over it but you're on your own with that one. Just thinking out loud, never tried it.

If the wood is Cherry, rent some time at a Tanning salon.:gar-Bi

Whatever you do, do it first on a piece of scrap.
