Cork sanding block

Somebody gave me this cork block for sanding. I like it but the cost seemed a bit high when I went to replace it.

So, I found these yoga blocks on Amazon, they are much larger and have finer cork for less cost.

I cut them to about the same size as the commercial block with a 14 tooth bandsaw blade and sanded with 100 grit cloth backed paper.

Nicer blocks for about $1 each.

I've been using some pieces of styrofoam used for packing in shipping cartons. Seems to do a good job with zero cost.

I was so cheap I just glued pieces of cork sheeting to some blocks. Works very well I think.

I do something similar. A few years ago I purchased some cork drawer liner material. It's a thin layer of cork with an adhesive back. I use it to make sanding blocks. Just cut a piece the size of a block of wood, peel off the back and stick it on. Actually works pretty well.

Mike I really like your idea for these, I’ve been using these for several decades now and they work great with a almost zero cost.

some left over material with a groove on one edge for a spline, wrapped with cork sheeting from an old bulletin board, they hold a half sheet of paper and do a great job.

that said, if I every get to where I need more I’ll go into Mona‘s exercise room and swipe one of her yoga blocks.

I made my sanding blocks with 3/4" plywood and some 1/8" rubber sheet glued on the face. It was from the big box store and I think it was intended to be used for isolating vibration when mounting stuff. I think it came in 12" x 12" sheets 1/8" or 1/4" thick in the plumbing aisle. It worked well, but it hardened up a little with age after a number of years. I may make some new ones with cork when I get out to get some. In the mean time I ran a light pass on the rubber side through the thickness sander to knock the hard glaze off. On the other side I am trying a layer of craft foam. I doubt it will hold up long, but we will see.
