Cleaning Delta 14-651 mortiser

I have this mortiser. While barely used by the first owner, he greased it up with something just short of road tar. So I'd like to get it apart, clean it and then get it lubed up with the correct product.



Anyone have one and if so have you ever removed the stabilizer (shock absorber like piece) from it? Does it just snap off the ball stud or do I have to remove the nuts. They're pretty small and seem to be a little flimsy to be messing with. Then what would you suggest for lube when it gets cleaned back up?

Sorry, should have said waiting to talk to Delta. I'll let you know of that happens. Hung up yesterday after 28 minutes on hold with them.
