I use them some times for reverse turning, some times vacuum, some times donut chuck what ever I find is easiest

I also use a homemade Donut Chuck and today I finished a Longworth Chuck to be used for completing the bottom of bowls. Both of these chucks can be made for a few dollars in bolts and scrap plywood and a small faceplate or a nut that fits your spindle, embedded in a wood puck and bolted to the plywood. The tailstock can be used for support for most of the work.
