I finally finished this rocking horse for my 3 1/2 year old son for Christmas. I did have it ready by Christmas morning. I picked this up used about 6 months ago and have been working to refinish it ever since. I can say that if I had it to do over I would have just made it from scratch myself. I think in the end it would have taken less time!
When I start it was in pretty beat up shape. The mane and tail were totally trashed and the finish had been well loved. I sanded the entire thing down to bare wood, sanded to 220 grit and stained it. Then I applied 3 coats of spray on Shellac (from a premixed can). I think it came out pretty good. The mane and tail took me over 3 hours to make.
Ultimately he loves it and has spent the last two days riding it. I am sure glad he likes it.
