This is some of the best looking Padauk I have seen.

These two 10ft boards are book matched.

The skinnier one came off the top of the wider one.

I am making a be-bop kit out of them.

14"x18" kick drum, 14"x14" floortom and a 8"x12" hi-tom.

I have enough scrap left over to make a snare shell too.

They aren't finished yet but we are getting there. :D

There must have been a big shipment of Padauk nto the country. I just bought a 27" wide by 7' long board that l am going to make into a table. One piece table tops aren't typical for my builds, but l was excited to find this. There were several 4/4 pieces 10' or longer and 24" wide at Capitol City lumber in Raleigh last week. I just don't typically see such large pieces of any hardwood at a typical retailer.

Yeah, these boards were at Woodcraft.

I pulled them out of a stack of Padauk because of the sapwood and the fact that they were a matched pair.

The guy at the counter said "YOU GOT THOSE BACK THERE?"

I think he was as excited as I was. :D

Re: Check Out This Padauk - Materrials Choices for drum shells?

I would love to see the drum shells that result from this fantastic looking material.

So many drum shells are high gloss paint - look great, but hard to tell what they are made of (not inappropriate for a commercial venture wanting/needing to make matching products, but you have a chance to do something different. I expect you have something different than piano grade gloss in mind for these.

I believe hard maple is the typical choice for drum shells. What I don't know if that because of mechanical properties (durability, strength or machinability), a 'takes a great finish' choice, or whether there are sound/acoustical properties reason choose maple. Drum shells aren't really about the resonance of a sound board (like a piano), are they?

Wow...beautiful stuff. I haven't seen much with sapwood like that. Good luck with it on the drum-set :icon_thum
