I haven't done as much testing with acrylic yet. What I have done doesn't make a lot of fumes, but I would still err on the side of caution. I always run a box fan in the general direction to circulate the air and that seems to do the trick.
One other safety note - the green safety glasses that came with it are a must. You can see the progress pretty close and safely with it on. Wearing them makes focusing the laser easier too since you can see it more clearly.
