I literally took a single stabbing cut on some white pine.

Since I’ve taken a “Wood is Good” mallet and pounded this type of chisel into white oak, I tend to think that this specific (and until now unused) chisel was defective!

I've chipped edges on Japanese chisels, but never that bad. I believe I would be talking to Woodcraft about this.

Sorry it happened man, it looks like the steel is grainy, like sugar, which could be a tempering/heat treating problem when they made it.

I can speak for the independently owned Raleigh store that we absolutely will replace the tool.
(I'd be surprised and disappointed if Woodcraft corporate or any other Woodcraft store didn't do the same.)

Herb (and Steve), Thanks for the comment. I kind of assumed you were speaking along those lines.

I intend to go up to our local independently owned store and see if they are able to help.
