If you read the link, then click one of the links on that page, in the words of the Magic 8-Ball, "All will be made clear".

Theo,
I read the referenced page and I picked up my Magic 8 ball and it said "Concentrate and ask again" Then I Googled Bill Ding and went here: http://www.billding.com/index.htm
and it makes sense. The clowns are cut in a way that they can balance at odd angles. Neat way to get rid of your scrap pile.

I could see it there (the "pattern" is an actual size picture).

It has a lot of sharp corners; not sure a router would save much time, but a bandsaw with a skinny blade might. You would still have to round the corners, but then just come back in from each side just a hair to make the corner sharp.

If I were going to make a batch of these I'd make a master to rout them out then add the fine details with a scrollsaw. I think that'd be a whole lot faster than just scrollsawing and a lot less irritating for me.

Theo, I agree with your approach. You would want to make a master pattern that didn't include the notches and keys. Rough BS them, and trim to final shape with a router and template bit. Then just cut out the notch and key details with a scroll or fret saw.

Or get a CNC router :icon_thum:icon_thum

Ah. I read it and it was immediately clear what it was. Never thought it might not be for someone else. But the Magic 8-Ball came thru in the end.

Any time I make multiples like that I like to make a routing master. Makes for nicely precise copyies. Made a couple of those yard art reindeer for my dau-in-law last year, used the parts I originally made as masters to rout them out and kept the masters, just in case I am ever forced to make any more. If there's anyway I can figure out who I'll return as in my next reincarnation I think I'll will those to myself, just in case.
