I used Behlen's Rock Hard Table Top Varnish on several projects, including a veneer top on a table in our kitchen. I stripped off the original clear finish (sanded) to reveal the maple veneer top. I applied a cherry stain and then sealed the raw wood with a 50:50 mix of the varnish and Behlen's Reducer and then applied two top coats. That was in 2004 and water still beads on the top and water left behind does not penetrate or leave stains. On the downside, the stain and varnish imparted a deep cherry color. I have applied the same formula (less the stain) to African Mahogany and to Bubinga in other projects. The same water resistant finish has been the result. Rock Hard Varnish is available at Klingspor's and comes in Glossy to Satin finishes.
