I'm in the process of building 6 stand alone boxes that are 4' by 1' with a divider brace placed mid way to avoid sagging. I plan on just using simple butt joints and wonder if I tape off the joint locations could I get away with applying stain and or finish prior to assembly to avoid corner finishing problems and speed the finishing process. Thanks

I apply most of my finishes before assembly. Sometimes I assemble small sections or pre-assemblies. Tape off the areas to be glued with painters (blue) tape. Make sure it is the blue tape. Some of the other tape will peel off wood fibers when you remove the tape. Place the tape shy of the adjoining piece so the stain and finish doesn't have bare spots when you peel off the tape (after assembly & glue up). Does that make sense?

Here is a picture of all parts finished before assembly & glue up. Hope this helps.
