A Cut Above: Woodworking students impress at State Fair

When you’re a high school instructor taking a team of students to a competition, you hope your kids will have a good time, do their best, and maybe place among the top contenders.

Last month, Avery Pipkin, who teaches woodworking at Cedar Ridge High School, took a group of his students to the N.C. State Fair in Raleigh to test their skills and talents in a competition. Not only did the teens earn a seat at the winner’s table, they probably could have made the chairs and the table.

Wood projects made by George Sorrell, a senior, Gavin Stone and Tyson Oswald, both juniors, placed first, second and third, respectively. Judges at the State Fair were wowed by the goblet and two bowls submitted by the CRHS students, and particularly impressed with their wood-turning skills, which is a point of pride for their instructor, who emphasizes the skill as an easy way for his students to continue their woodworking interests beyond school.
