a couple of wet/green wood truisms

A couple of truisms I got from a bowyer's site. As far as bows are concerned, they are truths, but for general woodworking, particualryly flat work, there may be some additional considerations... 1 - Wood dries from the outside in. If you are going to shape the wood smaller, do it while wet...

Completed this a couple weeks ago

Spalted Maple bowl, Phillip (ptt49er) gave me a while ago. Finished it with Danish oil and paste wax. Still working on the photography. I need to figure out how to get some more shadow, you can't really judge the size of the bowl. It's about 9" in diameter and 6" tall.

A couple of comments from the picnic

I just wanted to say that it was great to see everyone at the picnic. I always regret that there isn't more time to talk with everyone. I wanted to say this while I was there, but forgot, I want to thank Sapwood, Gator, Tomferone, and of course Steve Coles, the exiting Board of Director...

Added a couple more planes...when will it stop?

Built a plane till, filled it up. Have enough to fill another and haven't even built it. Just have a thing for planes and chisels. Got this one in the mail today. What a week! Have pics of the Miller Falls No. 9, just sharpened the blade and wiped it off. It works wonderful. A very nice example...

Just a couple of simple bowls

There's nothing special about these rather ordinary looking bowls but I thought I would post them anyway. The walnut bowl is from a small piece of walnut that Gary (NC Turner) gave me. It was almost as tall as it was wide. The final dimensions of the bowl are 4 5/8 x 3 1/4. I call it my sunrise...

These are a couple HF's that I showed at our last club meeting. They are turned from the same cherry burl. I parted it in half and turned both of them end grain. The first one is 9" tall by 5" dia. with the base being 1 1/2". Both are finished with danish oil and buffed. I learned something from...

Advice on technique? Couple of issues

Hi all, Jointer: Seems I must be doing something wrong here...I have an 8" jointer, never had any issues with it. Do not know if I just noticed it or I have always had the problem but, when I lay one of the wide faces down to flatten it, the end up front always ends up noticeably thinner. I do...

A couple things from my house and a question

So I've got these Doug Fir brackets a made from ripped down glullams and a walnut front door that I need to finish. I didn't make the door but did the brackets. I really would like to use the best clear finish possible and would like to use the same product for both, if there is one. What...

A couple of Thanksgiving shop tours

Over Thanksgiving, I had a chance to visit a couple of shops. They belong to a father and son: That's Papa Louis and his son Ricky. My parents divorced in my teens and Louis has been my mother's companion for over 25 years. For reasons financial and personal, they never married, but the...

    A Couple Bowls

Today I had to put the mustard monster to work ... so I took my try at a couple of bowls. Four went on the lathe, but only two came off finished. Unforunately the Walnut variations didn't make it because of STUPID USER mistakes. However, two others did. These are only about the 10th bowls...
