Compound cutting on the Scrollsaw

I have found some people don’t understand how these pieces happen. Even after watching someone cutting one. I thought I would show the process so others could understand it. I hope this helps.

Picture one is the 2 sided pattern applied to 1 1/2” X 1 1/2” popular
Picture two and three is the profile cut. I removed it from the block so you can see just what is cut so far. I will re insert it into the block.
Picture four is the other side cut. NOTE that is going to get cut in the center of the piece in picture 2.
The last picture shows the completed bunny and the fall offs.

Compound cutting animals is a lot of fun! I especially love cutting some of the bird patterns, but the legs are very fragile. Sometime soon I'll try to post some pictures of some of them. Thanks Berta!

I have a hard time with compound cuts. That’s why I’m practicing.
What blades and size are you using? For compound cutting the blades make a very big difference. Also what wood?

The butterfly body was also a fail, one antenna broke off.
I do believe it’s pressure. I am also having difficulty with the turns. Most evident in the stool top.

I bought a gross of Pegas Modified Geometry blades but no matter the size, they break in very short order--I have much better service from the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse blades. I like the Polar for compound cutting, but I don't have any on hand right now. I had a piece of zebra wood that cut very nicely and made a really nice compound dragon etc. Most compound cut pieces are from poplar, but for cutting reindeer on the band saw I like to use scrap 2x4's.

Bruce did you get those Pegas blades with a small notch at the top? Those were the only ones that I had a breakage issue with and Pegas replaced them no questions asked.

New set of wings have been successful! Some slight burning. One section is slightly thinner. Will try the body again tomorrow.
