15" Planer options

Has anyone had any experience with or heard anything about the Steelex ST1002 15" planer? I am considering some type of a 15" planer, used or new. also considering Grizzly G0477,

Thoughts?

Additional Info - IGNORE MY NEIGHBORS COMMENTS and OPINIONS :rotflm:

LOML has given green light on building the kitchen cabinets and the door panels are wider than 13" so it seems a 15" planer would be in order. But not sure I can justify new or higher end 15" so looking at used or lower end 15" planers. Here are some options I was looking at:

other option is to get a nice Dewalt 13" planer and simply pay/swap favors for use of a 15" planer when I need one - there are several around. Can likely get a good used Dewalt easier.

Dan, you need to pay Bas a visit and check out is new Jointer/Planer combo. Not 15" but the way to go.

Gotta say that $850-950 to me is a lot for mobile head planer. I wonder if you would consider the mobile feed table instead..like the G0453? I use a similar grizzly planer to the 453 and love the quality. Additionally, there will be a point where consideration on a helical head comes in. The G0477 can't be upgraded to my knowledge.

How long do you want to keep this planer?

Seems like these models would be more temporary than a lifelong, one time purchase. If I was going to spend $800 or more, I would probably go another few hundred and get a higher quality machine.

Suggest looking at Craigslist, there are a couple of planers listed (not mine):
sale-wx7bg-1495064937@craigslist.org (15" Woodtek, needs bearing, but probably a good deal)
sale-dnnuk-1491532942@craigslist.org (16" Jet, seems like to good of a deal at $500, careful on this one)
sale-sk66q-1480771376@craigslist.org (15" Delta, looks like owner is wanting to sell as package with a bunch of other tools)

There are others but thought the distance might be too much to Ohio or PA.

The 16" Jet is definitely a scam. Stay away :)

Soon as you get the 15" planer you will need 16".:gar-Bi may as well bite the bullet and gat the 20" model. a drum sander wood be nice too........ AKCHOOLEE the sander would be more useful. :icon_thum panels could be glued up in 2 halves, planed, glue halves together and drum sand the panels to thickness. flat too!:rotflm:

your post is more evidence that association with this website is definitely responsible for a definite increase in the $ spent for tools. All for a good cause, but more dollars none the less. I am aiming at $1000 tops, so while I like your sentiment, it ain't gonna happen!:no:

I had a Grizzly 1021 for 15" planer many years and it was a good machine. No experience with the others you are checking.

15" planers are pretty much generic, with the two different types being movable beds, or movable head. My Delta has the movable head. I like the fact that tables stay the same height. If you should snag a used one without infeed / outfeed tables, you will appreciate this. But the one drawback is I have to swing the motor out of the way to change knives. My Rockwell 13" has a movable bed. Don't confuse my Rockwell with current JUNK carrying the Rockwell brand. Salem snagged a used generic for about $200. I paid $600 for my Delta (used) a couple years back. It was in "mint condition." If you watch craigslist, used Delta's pop up for $600 - $750 range regularly. Except when you are looking one.

I think I'll just write the check to Froglips and WoodArtz! They talk a great talk, but haven't pointed out any deals yet!

Fred had some good thoughts, that maybe a smaller planer and a drum sander might be a better more versatile route and be good for a wider variety of projects,

Patience. That is the key. Used is a great route to go, and one will pop up here or on Craigslist sooner than later. A 15" is a good size, and I used mine for many years before I ever decided I wante to get a drum sander.
