    After 22 years

My table saw arbor is still exactly 5/8 inch, I mean exactly 0.625 inch as measured with a micrometer.

    So, what's the big deal?

Well apparently some 8 inch dado sets have mounting holes that are also exactly 0.625.

    How do I know that?

I have two different brand sets that are made for 5/8 inch table saws but won't fit mine.

After buying the second one that didn't fit I did some measuring. Then I decided to fix the problem.

I could file or sand the arbor, but I have a dozen $50-$100 blades that fit and work great. I measured some of them and the holes are 0.626- 0.628.

I decided to buy a reamer and enlarge the holes in the dado sets. I bought a 0.626 machinist's tool steel reamer and used a vise grip plier to hold it, then fed it into each saw blade by hand.

Now, all the blades fit my saw with no excess movement on the shaft.

If anybody has 5/8 blades that don't fit their saw, we can fix it now.

You did that modification detail right.
Considering the cost and value of a well fitting dado set, that reamer just paid for itself in the long term even if you never use it again.

    Re: After 22 years

I called Freud because my 6" dados would not fit my saw and they told me to use sandpaper to adjust the hole side. That helped a little, but not as much as Mike's method. I stopped by Mike's shop this afternoon and observed him working on a set of Freud blades. They went on his saw's arbor with the greatest of ease!

    Re: After 22 years

I have a Freud 8" Dado set and have the hardest time getting the blades and spacers on my Jet saw. One time I thought the blade was not coming off, and took me about 20 minutes of walking off and coming back every couple minutes trying to remove it. Other times it is the hardest to get on. For this very reason I hate using my Dado set. I was tempted a few times to hit the holes with a rat tail file, but I fear putting the hole out of round.
For what you pay for the Dado set, you would think they would have it right for the 5/8" arbor.

Not all 5/8" arbors are .625" cylinders. Some times the metal gets burred and dinged so that there may be a raised ridge that can give you a fit. Lightly running a fine toothed file across the spinning arbor after the motor is shut off and the speed is down to the last 30% can have positive results.

    Re: After 22 years

Hey Mike, any chance you can bring that reamer to the sharpening class next month and give a demo? I have a couple blades that are a pretty snug fit on my Grizzly saw that I would like to tweak a bit. I'd feel a lot better about doing it if I see someone do it first.

    Yes, I'll bring it.

Frank, remind me to bring the reamer to the picnic in May and I'll fix your dado set.

Bob, I thought about that, but all my other blades slip on easily and I didn't want to make the arbor too small for them.

Some 600 grit or finer sandpaper is probably a better thing to use here as to not remove too much material.

    That's a very logical conclusion.

Mike I have a metal vise one some 3/4 ply that we could clamp down if you want me to bring it.

No thanks Berta, we don't need the vise.
