    Phenolic Plywood Report

I am posting to report my 4 years of experience with phenolic plywood as an outfeed/assembly table. Since my shop is not very large I needed an outfeed table that doubled as an assembly table so it needed to be bigger than needed just for outfeed. It is 40"X60". As I was considering the top I had the option of laminate but laminating both sides of such a large area (to me) was not very appealing. And lately laminate has been hard to find as it has really fallen out of favor in kitchens. When I found out the cost of phenolic plywood I had to reconsider. But I finally decided the time savings was worth the extra cost.

Over the years it has held up well to wear. The major wear point right beside the table saw show no sign of wear. I have used it extensively for assembly and no wear issues there either. Nothing I have used sticks to it - not dried glue, dried caulk, etc. Never got epoxy on it so I can't say what would happen with it. So wear is not a problem however scratching is. At times I have assembled some heavy projects and at times I did not realize a nail or screw was not fully seated or stuck out in some way. When I slid the project across the table top it make a substantial scratch that I feel laminate would resist. Additionally dropping something heavy will dent it. Again, I think laminate would resist better.

I made some jigs from the extra and it works well for this purpose and is really stiff.

Not sure anyone is interested in this but I decided to post FWIW in case someone is considering this material in the future.

    Re: Phenolic Plywood Report

When I needed an out-feed table I went to Home Depot and found a 2'X4' top covered on both sides with melamine and it cost me under $4. This was about 12 years ago. I have since cut notches in the side to hold the rifle barrels upright while I used the table for my spotting scope for target practice and scope set-ups. I have drilled holes in the top for various reasons and even painted the top black. Recently decided to change t out for something else a little cleaner. Went back to Home Depot and sure enough they had the same tops stacked under a shelf and I grabbed one and it cost me a whopping $4.02 which included the tax. I came home and replaced the old top with the new and decided to put a small strip of wood around the edge to dress it up a little. It's not as wide as you are using, but works fine for my use and is replaceable for a few dollars.

I went to HD and saw one of the guys sitting at his desk and mentioned that I had bought a table top some years ago and he said there is a few under the shelf in isle??? He said he thought they were on sale right now too but wasn't sure. For the $3 89 or whatever it was, there was no sale tag but I found it in the lumber area on floor under a shelf.

    Re: Phenolic Plywood Report

For the price and size, it makes a great out-feed table or even a smaller assembly table. I have painted on it, reloaded on it, target and scope sighted on it, wife has repotted plants on it. I have even used it as a scaffold while painting in the shop.
I will find something to do with the old piece before too long!

I believe this is it at HD

    http://www.homedepot.com/b/Storage-O...tialmax&NCNI-5

I have seen it cut down into 2' x 4' panels in the area where they sell smaller plywood and MDF panels ("Handi-Panels").

I have used it for tool cart tops, drill press table etc..

I'll have to look next time I'm down but I've never seen any small, cheaply priced pieces of that - it's always around $35 a sheet.

    Re: Phenolic Plywood Report

The stuff is precut into 2 foot X 4 foot pieces. The only drawback is the edges are raw and unfinished. I just cut some wood down to size and glued and hit with a brad nailer to hold until dry and it works great.
I bought mine in Danville Va where I do most of my shopping because I am on the NC/VA border line in the North West corner of Person County.

You can also find good deals on counter tops at Habitat Stores.

Where I shop in Danville, it seems they want new price for the stuff there at habitat restore. I can't go in there any more. It gets me too aggravated.

That looks like particle board and not plywood. Based on some of the responses in this thread I'm wondering whether or not anyone has actually found/used phenolic plywood at HD?

Sorry, I should have said right away that this is particle board and not plywood. I have not seen the plywood you mentioned. I don't think I have ever seen it before at all.

Correct. It is doublesided laminate with a particle board core. Not phenolic. The only place I have seen phenolic plywood is at Woodcraft.

    Sorry for the confusion.

    Re: Phenolic Plywood Report

I considered melamine but I am not a fan of melamine. Too slick for me and easy to chip. Dropping a heavy project on it could be a problem. I did not, and still don't, think it would make a good assembly table. Outfeed is a different matter. I did check at my local Restore and the one in Raleigh but there was nothing available at the time the size and material I needed.
