if it's small, rattle can can give you great results and ease. After a couple coats of Amber applied whatever way you want, you can sand out any streaks etc. Too bad amber doesn't come in a can.

    Re: Amber Shellac

Thought I would add here instead of starting a new thread...

I'm close to being able to start finishing a walnut kitchen island top. My plan is to use garnet shellac, then top coat with RockHard. Klingspor's was out of Behkol, and North Carolina doesnt sell 190 Proof Everclear any longer. A friend suggested Klean Strip Green DNA, which according to the MSDS is 80-90% Ethanol, less than 5% Methanol, and 1.5% Ethyl Acetate. Seems to be as much Ethanol as Behkol minus the Isopropanol.

Anyone have experience with Klean Strip Green DNA and Shellac? It's $8 per gallon less than Behkol and most importantly, in stock.

also searching the forum on this resulted in a thread with Bill Anderson mentioning testing the use of Isopropanol from the drug store. Did he ever post results?

Stephen, I've not tried it but you used to be able to order 190 proof everclear from NC liquor stores. No idea if that's still the case or how long it would take. Might be worth a phone call or visit to you local store to inquire.

My current garnet shellac is mixed with Kleen Strip DNA. It works just fine. Not sure that I would be able to appreciate the difference when mixing or applying. From an exposure standpoint I'd rather use 190 Everclear. Last I heard you could request it as long as you asserted that it was for industrial use but I haven't actually tried the ABC store. Did you ask them or go by internet info?
There have been many discussions on the preferred Shellac diluent as I guess you've realized.

Brian - our local Guilford County ABC store clerk in downtown Greensboro specifically said that wasn't an option. Who knows for sure. It's all good, since I have alternatives.

Chris, I'm curious. Was it Klean Strip DNA or Klean Strip Green DNA? Klean Strip Green DNA is, most likely, over 90% Ethanol.

    Re: Amber Shellac

I also emailed Bill Anderson regarding using Isopropanol instead of denatured Ethanol. He's been using 99% Isopropanol (rubbing alcohol)with shellac for about a month now. The drug store Isopropanol is usually 70%, but 99% is available online, and it's about the least expensive option I've seen. Ethanol and Isopropanol are much healthier than methanol, which is in all denatured Ethanol in various concentrations. If I'm not mistaken, Isopropanol dries slightly slower than Ethanol as well - Methanol dries the fastest.

I can't vouch for this website, but 99% Isopropanol for $15/gallon.

Everclear was 95% ethanol with 5% water (the higher cost was the ATF tax because it's ok to drink it). You don't want water with shellac!

    Re: Amber Shellac

Bill's been using rubbing alcohol for a little over a month, now, with good results. Based on my experience with inks and solvents in the printing industry, and a couple of expert woodworkers, shellac doesn't care what type of alcohol you use. It will dissolve. The difference is in health and drying rate. Methanol dries the fastest and is very bad for us. Isopropanol dries slower than Ethanol (but still very fast).
