    Would like ti preserve a slice out of a tree. 15" diameter, 24" or 30" circumference, 6" thick.....

    What kind of wood species is your slice (aka cookie), when was it cut, and how are you storing it so far? What do you intend to do with it?

    I've done the same thing recently with some unique slices from a cedar log. I cut the slices with my chain saw, then sanded them smooth with a belt sander. After that was about 6 coats of polyurethane. I also turned a big red oak log into a table using the same process. I sanded and polyurethaned them very soon after cutting to minimize checking.
