    Hand cut Mortise and Tenon

Here's a nice breakdown of doing a M/T with hand tools.

Its always good to leave the stiles long so you can knock the tight joints apart easier. It helps

    Dan, Nice tutorial.

A favorite video on mortises is Roy Underhill's "ant farm" demo. It really brings out the exact mechanics of chopping a mortise.

    Dan, PBS Woodwright online episodes.

Look for "Painless Panel Doors" at 18:30 into the episode. Of course, the entire episode is very good but the "ant farm" view is an interesting addition.

ill also add that leaving the stiles long gives some extra meat to take the abuse while chopping the mortise.

Re: Hand cut Mortise and Tenon

Stephen, I have that LN Joined Chest DVD so I'd seen that version before.

But I hadn't seen the Paul Sellers YouTube video where he cut mortises (behind glass) with a Pig Sticker "Mortise chisel versus bevel edge chisel" and mentioned that he'd taught over 3,500 students to do it that way.

    Thanks

I have little doubt that if I were to chop multiple mortises with a bevel edge chisel, especially in oak, I would end up with a bent chisel.

Thanks for the directions. Roy does a really nice job of showing the power of the pig sticker. I have a 5/16 mortise(pig sticker) chisel that I have used for years and I love that thing for good straight mortises. In a pinch, beveled chisels can work but they do twist a little when I pound them. I guess I just love the mortising chisel and I stay with it. I tried some of the inexpensive Narex mortise chisels and I think they work very well and they hold an edge quite well. They seem like a good value. Maybe some others have a chisel they like?

    Again thank you
