    I've said this before but I just can't get over the fact that they sell a bunch of these things.
    I like gadgets and cool stuff but gimme a break!
    Like they say, "things are worth what people are willing to pay for them".

    Sorry, but every time I get one of Woodpecker's "One-Time-Deal" emails I just sit there and shake my head.
    I don't mean to offend or dissuade anyone from purchasing one or two of these squares.
    If $329.99 is pocket change for you; go for it.
    Just don't be tempted to take out a second mortgage to finance the purchase ;-))
    I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

    Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

    Amen, brother, amen! I've always thought of "value" as the best possible quality for the least cost. I don't expect you'll be seeing any red squares in my shop anytime soon.
    I'll gladly tell you how I do something. Just please don't confuse that with the right way to do it, and almost certainly not the only way.

    Everybody sings the praise for starrett tools have any of you people priced any new precision starrett tools lately.

    Go to their website and price a comparable size and quality square from them.

    I am in no way denigrating starrett quality but compare apples to apples.

    Its amazing how I read posts on a regular basis here where someone complains that they can't get people to pay a fair price for their quality hand made wares and then lots of times these same people want to buy quality tools for bargain basement prices. If its mine its worth gold if its yours its worth squat mentality. I'll get off my soapbox now and let the regular programing resume.

    A starrett square that has a similar dimension (12 5/16"x24") cost $1,538. Yes, that is right, $1,538. That is not a typo. I am sure the starrett is better quality and more accurate (0.0002"/ft vs 0.001/ft) than the woodpeckers 26"x16" square, but is cost $1,538 as opposed to $169. It costs 9x more. Can great woodworking be done without these kinds of tools? Absolutely. Would I love to have one of these big red squares in my shop, you bet.

    As an aside, I have a woodpeckers router lift. I lost the starter pin. I wanted to buy another one (I expected to get taken advantage of with price and shipping), I called woodpeckers because I could not see any place to order one on their website. After 2 minutes on the phone, they informed me that they would send me out another one free of charge (not even charging for shipping). They are a bit expensive, no argument there, but I have been happy with the few products I have gotten from them and now I know that they have great customer service as well.

    I've noticed that discord as well.

    Value is defined differently for everyone...and even for the same person it changes over time. Back when I had more spare time than money, I liked buying and fixing up old tools, such as hand planes. Now that my situation has reversed, I like tearing the wrapping off a Veritas box and putting it immediately to use. Such is life.

    are they expensive..... that would be a yes and no..... if they make it easier to get a project accomplished.... if they keep you from making a wrond cut in a expensive sheet of plywood the it might be worth the cost


    I love the red tool I have but you have to pick and choose the ones you really need... and yes other manufactures or making something youself might be the way to go for some people

    I would happily take a set as a gift (if there was a gift receipt I would probably return for a credit!)

    One thing I am always stressing to my students in our practical chemistry laboratory tests is that you can only be as accurate as your least accurate device.

    Isn't it the same for WWing? Wouldn't you need a whole chest of layout tools and a shop full of machinery with the same tolerance to get the advantages out of squares like these?

    I guess I have always "gotten by" with inferior or used tools because it is my only choice. Maybe one day I can afford some of these tools and I will change my tune.

    You can only be as accurate as you can verify. Errors in the system sometimes cancel each other out.

    If I didn't already have three Starrett squares and two Starrett sliding bevel square sets that I bought at flea markets for nearly nothing I would consider getting one of these.

    my inaccuracies are not the fault of my tools (despite what I tell Santa Claus). I'd still cut the board an inch short, just more precisely an inch short than before and perhaps a few hundred dollars poorer. But seriously, if i didn't have an accurate square, then by all means, it's worth the piece of mind -plus it's red!

    Use a high dollar square and a carpenter's pencil to draw a line, then cut to the line with a big hand saw or circular saw- end result??

    Other than checking for squareness (which often changes anyway after I've readjusted the clamps, and can be done just as easily and accurately with a bar guage.), etc., I seldom use a big square for much.
