Another New Member
Hi all. I guess I'm a wannabe woodworker for the time except for some very simple things I've done, but I'm hoping to erase the wannabe part of my status very soon. My father in law is a talented furniture maker as a hobby and though he rarely has time to take on any projects these days, let alone teach me, I can have access to his tools and equipment. I've been reading, studying, and looking, dreaming, and eager to get hands with some more complex projects.
What actually led me to this site was a google query where I was trying to find somewhere local I could pay to have some maple planed. My father in law has a planer but these slabs are a little too big for it. Well, the query led me to a thread on this site and while it was a few years old and some of the posters no longer active I decided to join up and maybe still find a place to get these planed as well as read up on what looks to be a wealth of information and advice here.
Sorry to be long winded and again, Hello!
Ray

Welcome! We are so glad you joined. I am not sure where Startown is in the state, but someone posting later today will be more helpful. I just wanted to say hello.

Re: Another New Member
Thank you Cathy. Startown is a stones toss from Hickory. I was really surprised Startown was even a suggestion when registering so I went with it but perhaps I should just change it to Hickory since it's much more familiar to people.

Roy,
Welcome to the site. We love pictures. Show us some of your earlier projects. Works in progress pictures would be good too.

Roy,
Welcome aboard and thanks for joining us!
As to which town name to use, the choice is entirely yours. For a given zipcode choice we offer all of the officially recognized cities and townships as defined by the U.S. Postal Service. You can make whatever selection from among these choices you feel best describes your location.

A warm welcome and you are definitely in the RIGHT PLACE! This wannabe has learned a lot from this site and you will be impressed with the level of expertise displayed here. Suggestion: there are no dumb questions... ask away! We travel to Hickory frequently since we have family (grandchildren!) there. Good access to stores and wood!

Re: Another New Member
Welcome to the site, Ron. As some others mentioned, there are a number of members in your area. Also, you're close to that great candy store for woodworkers, Klingspor. You might want to visit them, but leave your wallet at home. Too dangerous.
And while you're there, ask if they know anyone local who could mill that lumber for you.
BillI'll gladly tell you how I do something. Just please don't confuse that with the right way to do it, and almost certainly not the only way..gif)

Roy welcome to our little sawdust pile. One thing you will learn is that there are a lot of great folks here.
We love pictures and here are 2 links that will help explain how to upload pics to your gallery and post them.

Re: Another New Member
Thanks all for the warm welcome. I'll definitely put up some pictures at some point. For now the few things I have make the log cabin I made out of popsicle sticks in elementary school look like high art
Hopefully I'll have something much better soon. Thanks for the links Bryan.
Bill, I'm familiar with the Klingspor shop. Only been in there once but my route to work took me right past it everyday for about 5 years. I'd be okay taking my wallet in if I went tomorrow. It's about 4 years old, the leather is pretty worn and there are some loose stitches and it's still worth more than whats in it...I don't think they'd want it
Asking them where I could get the lumber milled is a good idea though. It's a couple of 8/4 curly maple slabs that were given to me and I've been dying to see what the figuring looks like. I'm pretty good with a camera so I'm hoping I might find someone local that would want to trade some milling work for some camera work.
Steve, I may be able to join the chat if work doesn't take over or cause me to forget. My work schedule often changes from day to day and even hour to hour but I should be free(ish) then.
Thanks again everyone.
