nah, it's Daja Vu.

Re: Collaborative art project
To turn a rectangle, each of 8 faces must be turned( and flattened) with the face aimed towards the tail of the lathe. A lot of math and guesswork to achieve a perfect size. Start big and end up not too small.
Attempting to let God's beauty out of logs!

Re: Collaborative art project
My bad language skills again. I mean to say a rosette within a rectangular slab. or a rodelle on a flat plank. or a round spot on a flat board. or a turning of some kind that would fit on a drawer front.
Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

Re: Collaborative art project
Is this something you are looking for lumber donations? if so let me know what species you are looking for and I can donate it. There are a lot of replies to this and I haven't sat down to read them all so it might have already been touched.

Re: Collaborative art project
Thank you, Chris.
Steve Coles said he would buy the wood. Maybe you could give us a good discount? Free would be fantastic.
You are welcomed to sign the cabinet or attach a small engraved plaque.
I think we want wood from a tree grown in North Carolina or at least a native species. Maybe Black Walnut?
40 Bd ft of nice 4/4 for the carcass and 20 BD ft of 8/4 for legs should do the outside.
I think the inside dividers and drawers will be 1/2 inch maple plywood.
Can somebody check me on that Bd Ft estimate?
The fronts can be all different or we could go with figured maple for all the drawer fronts.
I really appreciate the offer, Chris. Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

Re: Collaborative art project
If someone wants to come by and pick it up I have the 4/4 walnut from NC, I have to check on the 8/4. I have plenty of 8/4 drying but won't be ready in time but if 4/4 glued up will work, let me know. I have plenty of curly maple for the drawer fronts. I'll donate it, but someone would just need to pick it up since we are rather busy sawing every chance possible.

Re: Collaborative art project
I am in for what will start out as a plain drawer front. In the process, I will over-engineer the thing, and it's anybody's guess what I end up with.
The final front may end up an affront.
The thing that holds up all my woodworking is simply getting started.

Re: Collaborative art project
I'll give it a few more days, but if no one volunteers to make the cabinet then I will have to do it myself.
I just volunteered to remake all the signs at Old Salem because they are in poor shape and there is no budget to replace them. If they agree that will take most of my free time for the next two years.
I hate to see this NCWW project stall but I will do my best to get it done as soon as possible. Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

Re: Collaborative art project
OK, it's been a few days and no one has volunteered to build the cabinet so I will.
Scott, can you get the wood to me? or at least to Raleigh and we'll find someone to help bring it from there.
Tim, can you hold off on the drawer boxes until I can cobble together a cabinet?
As soon as I know for sure what size the drawers will be i'll start a new thread or PM everyone who said they would make a drawer front.
Thanks to everyone who saw some potential in this and stepped up to help NCWW.Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.
