New to the hobby......well.....sort of
Hey everyone,
My name is Chuck and I'm from Wilkes County NC. My wife and I have been collecting antiques, farm relics, rust, dust and dirt for years. This spring, as I was digging through the barn, I came across some old saws, planes and other tools and decided to clean them up and use them a little bit. In doing that, it has sparked an interest in using them for their intended purpose as opposed to just putting them on a shelf and looking at them. So I started doing some research and thinking about doing some light carpentry/woodworking as a hobby.
Interesting thing is....this isn't my first experience with woodworking. All my life, my dad has had a shop (or two) that he built furniture, nick-nacks, birdhouses, and other woodworking projects in. He was pretty darned talented too. As a small kid, I would go and stay with him in the shop, play in the sawdust, hammer on pieces, etc. As I got older, he wanted me to go with him and learn a little about the craft. As most adolescents do, I was defiant and didn't want anything to do with such an "uncool waste of time". Well, my dad is getting older (as am I) and figure its time to learn the lessons he can teach me before that knowledge is gone forever.
As I'm getting into this, I hope he can teach me some of his methods and skills so I can pass them on someday too.
I look forward to talking with ya'll and learning something from you too.

Welcome aboard Chuck.
Why not ask your dad to join too? I'm sure we would all love to take advantage of his years of knowledge and experience.“I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.” - Richard M. Nixon

Welcome to the site Chuck. Enjoy your Dad while you can, and soak up every bit of knowledge he's willing to share.
BillI'll gladly tell you how I do something. Just please don't confuse that with the right way to do it, and almost certainly not the only way..gif)

Welcome to the site, Chuck!
Would love to see some pictures of some of your and Dad's work. We relish in the experience offered by our seasoned woodworkers! Nothing like passing on some of the traditional tricks of the trade.
Post often and stay safe around those power tools.

Hello there Chuck!
As has been already said, take all your Dad will share and know how blessed you are to have him still. I lost my 92 year old Dad in December and I can't tell you how often I go to call him for help and then realize I have to look to my memory of what he would tell me or do.
We are glad you found us and look forward to your participation.Barbara
