Greensboro area crafter new to the forum
Hi, I'm Scott
I've been woodworking for about a year now, mainly doing smaller pieces like cutting boards, jewelry, road cases for guitar amps and pedalboards. I have also started woodturning simple things likes spinning tops. I'm into minimalist modern style furniture with nice joinery. Slab pieces are interesting to me as well. I want to expand my knowledge of the craft specifically in joinery and furniture building areas. I would like to eventually work mainly with hand tools. I know there are some people on here that make there own tools. That is awesome! I like the idea of sustainable practices in woodworking and using felled trees. I'm open to advice on any form of woodworking. I want to soak in as much as i can and i would love the opportunity hands on work. Classes and group collaboration projects would be amazing to be a part of. I want to put in the work to be a skilled woodworker. Woodworking as a career is the ultimate goal. I feel that the repetition that is a part of work is were you really start perfecting your craft. That is were i would like to be. This is the beginning of a long road, hopefully it leads to where i want to be. This forum is great, i can't wait to get to know some folks on here.
I guess a question i have right off is about working with black epoxy along side wood. Does anyone here have experience with that?

Re: Greensboro area crafter new to the forum
Scott, Welcome to the group. Many hand tool guys here that will help - I am too lazy and tend to add power to almost all tasks
Your question about using black epoxy with wood is interesting. If you are using epoxy to join open grain wood you need to keep the epoxy from getting into the surface grain because once it does it will be very hard to stain or finish the wood. I would pre-finish the wood before joining with any epoxy - just do not finish the edges that you want to join. hope this helps

Re: Greensboro area crafter new to the forum
phil- thanks for the response. Your tips are very helpful. I'm interested in using the epoxy as more of a design element than anything. I've attached a link to a piece that uses epoxy.I'll try to find the more elaborate pieces that i've found interesting. I really like the contrast of the black against the wood grain. Has anyone used the epoxy in there work? And by the way, that canoe is sick! Great job!

Scott,
Welcome to the forum. I could not view your attached picture. You may want to try and upload the picture to the gallery and linking it to your post. We really like pictures.
We have a monthly luncheon on the third Thursday of each month at Moose Cafe in Greensboro. It is a good time to meet some local woodworkers. I hope you can make it.

Re: Greensboro area crafter new to the forum
Welcome to the site Scott. As Steve said, we'd love to have you join in one of our lunches at The Moose Cafe.
I'm not sure exactly what you're asking about using black epoxy. I've used it on a couple of projects where I had to fill some dark knots and wanted them to kinda stand out. These were furniture projects, not turnings. I mix the epoxy and add a black pigment, although you can add almost anything you want to give it color and/or texture.
BillI'll gladly tell you how I do something. Just please don't confuse that with the right way to do it, and almost certainly not the only way..gif)

Re: Greensboro area crafter new to the forum
I am familiar with this technique only because another NCWWer gave me a piece that he started. He used a styrofoam cup as a form and glued walnut shells to the outside of it then wrapped that in aluminum foil and poured the voids full of thinned black epoxy. When you turn the blank you get walnut shell shapes suspended in the epoxy just like Moulthrop's pine bowl. If you leave the nuts whole then the meat can be picked out after the piece is turned and the insides of the nuts form openings through the bowl.
Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

Re: Greensboro area crafter new to the forum
Glad you found us. One Woodworkers explained to me how he took bark from walnut, As I recall, and burned it, using the ash as a pigment he mixed with the expoxy. I'd want to use a very slow setting expoxy, I'd think. The fast set gets too hard too fast for some things. We demand pictures...lotsa pictures.
