Finished a couple wine bottle stoppers...
I finished a few bottle stoppers last night. The first is an Osage Orange with a captured ring (inspired by the turning workshop last weekend), the second is Olivewood which a great wood to work with and the third I'm not sure what the wood is. I'm thinking it is Tamboti, but I'm not sure. Hopefully someone can look at it and tell.
A special thanks to Milissa and Alan for sending me a nice care package which included the homemade tools that were used in the workshop last weekend. They worked great! THANK YOU!

Re: Finished a couple wine bottle stoppers...
Very cool! I like the captured ring stopper! Does that require special tools to make those??

Thanks and yes it does. Chessspy has videos published on making the tools. Here is the thread: Tool Making Videos

Re: Finished a couple wine bottle stoppers...
Those look great! Milissa was demonstrated turning captured rings. She and Alan are great to share knowledge and experiences. It make take a million years to find my lathe (when LOML cleans his part of the shop everything gets dumped into my side - lol!), so I may need a refresher on those. Definitely do not know how to make the tools.
Sorry for running on a tangent - the bottle stoppers look great! What type of finish do you use on those? I think you could have Bethlehem Olivewood, and the "regular" olivewood. They do turns beautifully. The texture makes the wood great for pens - very pleasant for the writer.Cathy Skipper

Re: Finished a couple wine bottle stoppers...
I love these! We are so glad you went straight to work with the little kit of tools.
I would make some wine bottle stoppers myself.........................except when I am not drinking box wine, I have moved up to screw top.
Sorry not to have seen these before: we are swamped with work, which is a good thing, but still gets in the way.~Milissa

Re: Finished a couple wine bottle stoppers...
Any time, Cathy. We can set you up with the tools for free, if you are not comfortable with the ancient art of tool rigging. Just PM me your address. You gotta find your lathe, though.
Also, you or anyone are welcome to come by if you are in the area. Nate is coming over tomorrow, for example, to show me how to turn pens & meet us & see the shop & all that. It's nice to have the workshop done, so we can work with folks.~Milissa
