Re: Lathe Dust Hood
My experience with dust collection at the lathe, they are good for when your sanding, but to pick up the chips and shavings, not so much. Even at the Folk School, where they have a huge cyclone, it didn't pick up chips worth a darn. I have one, smaller then that, I just use for sanding and it works awesome.

Re: Lathe Dust Hood
I use my dust collector to vacuum the floor after I've swept.
I tried to set up a lathe hood a few years back and quickly abandoned the idea after I realized I was catching less chips than I was spraying on the floor...
To everything... turn, turn, turn!

Re: Lathe Dust Hood
I have that exact model on my wife's mini lathe. Yeah, it doesn't catch a lot of the chips/shavings but it's better than nothing. I've got one of the rockwell 4" vacuum thingys on one of the blast gates in the shop for general cleanup.
No job is worth doing unless you can get a new tool out of it.

Re: Lathe Dust Hood
I made one. It works great for sanding but not so much for chips. It is a simple angled box with a 4" connecter attached to the back like the plexi-glass one pictured above. It is a must have for sanding exotics.

Re: Lathe Dust Hood
As everyone else has said, DC works well for sanding dust, but not for chips. I've tried several different approaches to this and none have worked for chips. Good luck.
In the realm of "unmet woodworking needs", this is definitely an area where someone could come up w/ a better idea.
BillI'll gladly tell you how I do something. Just please don't confuse that with the right way to do it, and almost certainly not the only way..gif)

Re: Lathe Dust Hood
sanding is when you really want (read NEED) the dust collection ; the curlies are no threat to your health and sweep/ shovel up fairly easily
its that pesky sanding dust that will kill you ............. face it, if you want a clean shop you are either going to have to clean it constantly or do no work in it
if this fact of life is worrisome could be its time for a different hobby/occupation/time and money drain hehe

Re: Lathe Dust Hood
I keep a 90 gal trashcan near my lathe, on wheels, like you put out on the street, it's used exclusivly for wood shavings from my lathe. I tried floor sweeps, vacuum attachment to my dust collector, it's just easier and faster to scoop into the trashcan, when it's full, I wheel it to the woods.

I have one of those from Penn state. It does a decent job, but the banjo for the delta midi is to small to mount it and there is too many things on the back of the bed for the magnets to hood securely.
I upgraded to a free standing hood.

Re: Lathe Dust Hood
Do you have a vacuum or a dust collector? On a lot of dust collectors it goes through the impellers. Sawdust from a table saw can make it but not shavings.
I made my own, fits in the lathe banjo or in an extra banjo I made. Head will rotate 360* in all three planes. Oval is a rectangular floor register box (goes oval when you cut it), about $4 at HD.
