    Re: Cantilevered Glass Shelf

Pic post worked just fine, Howard.

    Great work!

Now, would you mind sharing some construction details? I'm trying to figure out how/what is securing the glass?

    Thanks for sharing your work.

That looks great, it is simple, clean lines and classy. I too am curious about the construction.

Typically the cantilevered glass is supported by inserting the glass into a slot/dado just wide enough to accept the glass.

I know nothing about the engineering particulars of glass, but I would love for some of you guys to educate me. This beautiful project begs the question.

Yep, I've got glass shelves on a store bought bracket that is just a little 1" or so lip that holds it.
No job is worth doing unless you can get a new tool out of it.

    Re: Cantilevered Glass Shelf

I cut the slot so that the glass is held in place simply by friction fit. No pounding to get it in, just slight pressure to slide it home. The wood surround is 2" thick.
I bought 1/2" tempered glass to be sure it could handle the weight of pottery, etc.
    Keep on truckin.

    Re: Cantilevered Glass Shelf

Looks great! 1/4" or 3/8" thick glass would have been plenty strong, but I think the 1/2" fits the proportion of the project very well.
