Turning workshop May 26-27
Asking for interest in a turning workshop at my shop in Walnut Cove, NC some weekend in May.
Workshop will be led by Alan Dewey and Milissa. Please see Alan's web site for videos and info. CHESSSPY: Alan Dewey
This will be basic instruction for experienced but untrained turners. Two days of intensive work and exercises to continue at your home shop.
Due to small space and intensive nature of this work we will limit this to three more students beside myself.
If you have been turning for many years but never learned how to do it right this is for you!
If this goes over well they may do more.Last edited by Mike Davis; 04-03-2012 at 07:37 PM.
Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

Re: Turning workshop
I know we are simply supposed to read these notices and not chatter, but I do wish to comment:
We can bring the two small lathes, and tools, if necessary.
This will be fun: a roomful of turners is a heartwarming thought. I am no teacher! Milissa is the bossy one. We will just do what seems needed.
Do note: I am not a bowl turner! That's a whole different world. Look at my website to see what I do.
We will put together a list of topics soon, and post them for people to review/comment.Alan Dewey, Asheville

Re: Turning workshop
Please chatter! This is absolutely the place for discussion.
Lathes and tools will be needed. I have one large lathe with variable speed and reverse that I use for everything. I have a smaller one that needs a lot of work so it probably won't be ready. I will move as much as possible out to the patio to make more room in the shop. Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

Re: Turning workshop
Write to Mike if you will and see what works out, please. He is hosting this and it's all good with us.
See how not "bossy" I can be?

Re: Turning workshop
Phil, How can I say No? When we have all the spots filled we can decide on a date.
Berta, yes you are in. Do you have any boxwood?
We will discuss lunch later, I'll probably make something. Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

Re: Turning workshop
Oh, forgot to mention this is another "free" workshop. I'm paying travel expense for the instructors.

Re: Turning workshop
"Do you have any boxwood?" is our new way of saying, "Thanks. Just fine, and glad to meet you, too."
We can bring the new lathes & the small ones, so we will come with 4 lathes plus our tools plus some wood. A road show!
What does everyone else turn? Bowls? Pens? What?~Milissa

Re: Turning workshop
I make bowls, plates, tops, mallets, rolling pins, handles and whatever else I need. No writing pens though, too many of my friends do a much better job.

Re: Turning workshop
If this works for you folks I could leave Raleigh by 6:30 - that should put me in Walnut Cove by 8:30 and I could stay until about 4:00. I can bring a bunch of scrap 2 x 2 and 3 x 3 cherry. I am not a complete novice at turning, but could surely use instructions as I am quite certain that I am using the wrong tools and techniques. I have made too many pens to count, a bunch of Christmas ornaments, a few platters and goblets and my favorite is a simple angel - I could bring a sample.
But if this is scheduled to be a two day class I do not want to take the place of someone who could make it both days
Thanks for this generous offer

Re: Turning workshop
We still have one place, I asked my son and he said he couldn't say for sure where he will be this summer.
So, until some one starts screaming for the spot it is yours. Similarly someone may be able to come Sunday but not Saturday and could fall in with a little extra help. If we get in that position I'll let you decide whether you want to give it up to someone else. The spot is yours and up to you how to use it.
I was thinking today we could ask for donations to the site, but the cow is out of the barn already. Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

Re: Turning workshop
We have the longest drive, I think, so an 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. start sounds good!
Berta--That's the right size, if you want to bring them along. We will bring a bit as well, and are thinking a piece of European boxwood for each person to try. I had about convinced myself these others we are trying are much the same....until I turned real boxwood again this afternoon. We may all become landscaping plant poachers.~Milissa
