Looking for green wood
Hi,
I am looking for green wood, other than white oak, to turn. Are there any green wood turners out there that can give me tips on finding this? I am thinking of contacting tree services but have never done this before. Thanks very much.

I stopped by at the owner of this listing and got some nice maple, there was still a ton left, this stuff was big, wet and HEAVY! Very nice though. The base was almost 36". I even left a decent crotch piece, well beyond my lifting after the piece I did grab."Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm."~ Sir Winston Churchill

Re: Looking for green wood
Sounds like you need a friend with some land in the country.
Might put an ad in the local farm rag. Or State Ag Review. Most people who are into preparedness, didn't get there because it makes sense. They got there because they suffered and chose not to suffer again.

Re: Looking for green wood
Jim,
Since you and I live in the same place I'm reluctant to tell you this.
I've found lots of green wood sitting at the curb after strong thunderstorms
move through. Let the homeowner cut it up for you and then just pick it up before Cary gets around to doing it.

Re: Looking for green wood
What time were you there? I swung through there about 4:00. The piece I hated leaving was a trunk section about 4' or more long that would have had several blanks for carved body instruments in it, but it was really heavy. I got a few small straight logs hoping to get woodwind blanks and some burly looking crotches.
I sent Jim Lee (OP in the thread) a message offering to share; I was actually going to post oferring to share for help cutting it up anyway.
What I can see of the color and grain looks very promising.

Re: Looking for green wood
I have a bunch of wormy red maple you can have. I live near Charlotte - not sure if it is too far for you. If you come to the Charlotte Shop Crawl I can bring some along. Let me know!

Re: Looking for green wood
Find a small logger in your area. They have cutoffs that are discarded and left. As a small logger I wouldn't have any problem with someone picking through the trash pile looking for pieces to turn, mill, or whatever.

Re: Looking for green wood
I have been out in the garage doing my St. Roy imitation riving spindle blanks. I have one crotch piece I would have left had I known you were coming. I have not heard from Jim Lee. I will get a picture of the one I am hesitant to split if one of you bowling boys wants a crack at it.

Re: Looking for green wood
OK, here are two pictures of the burly crotch:
And here are 3 smaller crotches all which have one long arm that I want to split for spindles:
I also got 3 "regular" short logs I have already split into spindle blanks.

Re: Looking for green wood
Nice looking crotch....um don't know why but I still feel dirty when I say that.
If Jim or anyone else dosen't take dibs on it I'd like to give it a crack. I am pretty well stocked on wood though so if someone else wants a go, by all means..."Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm."~ Sir Winston Churchill

Re: Looking for green wood
Jim PMed me after I posted that.

I have most of the spindles off. They look like firewood, but I placed the wedge carefully and them drove it through so they don't have cracks outside the splits. I bagged them for now (tight sealed trash bags). I will wax or paint the ends after I get them square or round witjh an established center.

Re: Looking for green wood
Jim came by last night and got the big crotch pictured above as well the smaller crotches without the long arms, which I had split and/or sawn off for spindles. It was nice to meet you, Jim. I have rought turned one spindle and this is some pretty maple.
