Resaw Question?

So. I am up here in Ohio this week to tote some stuff from my inlaws estate back to NC. (Unfortunately no tools in the deal,though!) My sister inlaw has three pieces of black walnut, about 4 feet long and about 16 inches in diameter. They cut down the tree and the "logs" have been sitting in their garage for about 1.5 years and look pretty dry to me. She has offered one of them to me, if I want to haul it back with me.

The question I have is how it would be resawed into usable stock. I don't have a BS, jointer or surface planer yet!) Short of having it milled by a sawyer, would I be able to do it myself with a BS? Has anyone actually started with stock "this rough", and if so how do you manage it?

Just wondering if it is even worthwhile considering.

IMO, it is going to be too heavy for you to do on a bandsaw. Chatting with Jeff the other night he has a sawyer that is pretty reasonably priced. Once you cut it up though, you are going to need to sticker it and let it dry though as 1.5 years is not much for a 16 inch diameter log IMO.

One year per inch thickness of the final boards is what I have always understood.

If they fit in your vehicle, take them!

First, a chainsaw will quickly resize them for 12" resawing, but there will be waste :cry:

Second, I know there are a couple of NCWWers in the area that have bandsaws capable of handling the 16" diameter that may be willing to help.

Third, walnut will last a long time. So now you have another ruse for LOYL to rationalize a BS purchase

Pack the log first then it will be a question of whether the other stuff will fit or not!:lol: One of these guys with a bandmill probably wouldn't charge you much to slab it out.

Perhaps it will still be here in June when we have to return for a wedding. Maybe a trailer is the only solution ...but no hitch! Live can be cruel!

Now that is a very good point. Splitting it would make it sizeable enough to handle and to cut with regular wood shop tools.
