Re: Pineapples
The vasolene won't last very long when they are mudding the walls. Have you considered cutting it out of a metal or trying the plexiglass instead?

Re: Pineapples
Yeah someone else suggested it. If this doesn't work then I am going to try the plexi and see if that works better.

Re: Pineapples
It's such a cool idea - I can't wait to hear how it works out.

Re: Pineapples
I was also thinking that when I do sheetrock work

(which I really can't stand to do by the way) the mud shrinks as it drys and that is why you have to put several coats on to feel in a nail hole/joints - So if they can mud it and make sure that the front is clean / leave the stencil in place while drying then it just might work - will take a long time to get it done this way but it just might work

Re: Pineapples
Phillip that is a good point. I had not thought about that. I would think that we could clean the front with a damp cloth after the mud is in the pattern and keep the pattern up there. Well I guess my shop is going to get a few pineapples today.

I will take some pics so you can see what happens during the different trials.

Re: Pineapples
Perhaps a very small hole in each of the 4 sides with a tiny headed nail or brad to hold up the stencil ?
The small hole would be easy to cover afterwards
just a thought...~Robert~

Re: Pineapples
Robert I thought about doing that also. I am doing some testing right now and am just waiting on the spackle to dry. Here is the issue Phillip was correct that it shrinks. It is shrinking alot but is still not dry to try and remove the form. I tried two different things. A hardwood form and a Ply form. I am going to let them both dry and see how they both do with no finish or any lubricant. It is in the 60's in the garage so I am sure it will take a little while for it to dry completly. The next test is to try some vasoline or spray cooking oil to see how that does. Then I am going spray several coats of Laquer on them and try that.
I actually didn't have to put any kind of mount for the form, the spackle held it up with no problem. I am also going to pick up some drywall compound and see how that works as well.

Re: Pineapples
well I did some testing with a couple of cuttings I did just trying to see what happens and with just some spackle it expanded and split the wood and then shrunk.
I have put down about 10 coats of laquer on the two cuttings and I hope that will help. I have not had a chance to get the pieces to them but that should happen this week and hopefully I will have some more updates.

Re: Pineapples
It expanded
didn't think about that - hope it didn't split the pattern to bad - Keep trying - I have a feeling you can figure it out

Re: Pineapples
I know you been asked to make this from wood but a flexible material might be the ticket, such as thick mylar or rubber sheet. My wife just showed me this website as an idea for our bedroom. Here it is:

Re: Pineapples
Yeah if this doesn't work we are going to find another material like that. They used a stencil similar to those they just want a thicker stencil to build it up more.
Phil the one that it split was a piece of poplar I had cut one on. It split it clear in half. Oh well. However the Ply snowflake I messed with didn't split. So i am thinking we will be okay from that end.
Hopefully next weekend we both have been sick this week.
