My first project in my new shop

These are pictures of the crosscut sled I built today.

First up my old second hand Craftsman 12" tablesaw.

And a picture of my 75 dollar jointer, also and old Craftsman.

Made a trip to The Woodworking Source, which fortunately for me is just down the road a bit. Picked up some cherry cutoffs that he had laying around, soft maple, and some hard maple

    View image in gallery

Started with a piece of 3/4 baltic birch. Added some hard maple runners.

    Added front and rear fences.

I used William Ng's 5 cut method to square up the fence and it came out perfect. Now I can build my box-joint jig and get on with building some things to help get my shop organized.
All I lack is finishing up.

Very nicely done. It is only fitting that the first project from the new shop is for the new shop.

Great looking sled, Ace. A sled like that can be a very valuable accessory for a shop.

Here's a non-video demo on how to calibrate a crosscut sled, for those of us who have slow internet and don't want to wait for a video to download.
I'll gladly tell you how I do something. Just please don't confuse that with the right way to do it, and almost certainly not the only way.

Looks great and well made sled. Very functional around the shop and sets you to create more beautiful stuff for the shop and home as well. Great job!

Looks great but if you are wanting a box joint jig then before you build one I would take a look at the I-Box made by Incra it was designed by a fellow NC woodworker that is on this site also

Re: My first project in my new shop

The I-Box would be nice to have but I plan on building a dedicated sled for 1/2" box joints as that is the size I will be making most often. Here is a link to the plans I will be using:
