Re: Dust problem with planer
A lot has to do with the pore structure of the wood. Red Oak is very open pored so when planed thinly it tends to break up. Poplar, Pine and especially Maple have closed pores so they make longer...

Salem, I too agree with your statement, but how often do you take flat square stock and run it over a jointer. A jointer is a machine designed to start to make flat square stock. A jointer in most...

You are using a jointer right and it is doing what it is supposed to do. A jointer will make one face or edge flat, and that is all. It does its work by removing wood and the resulting surface then...

Re: Why does a tack hammer have a split end?
I think the split end is magnetized to hold the tack for the first strike, and then you turn it around and use the solid face to finish driving the tack.

They stink because they flower before Bees are really active so they have to rely on Flies as pollinators and they smell like something Flies would like.

Yep, that's typical for a Bradford Pear. You'll rarely see one more than 15 years old with a full crown. The branches crotch angles are so tight that when the branches expand as they grow the wood...

Re: Not the way I wanted to get turning blanks
It's not a matter of if a Bradford Pear will blow down or break apart, it's a matter of when. Did it break at the root stock graft line about 6" above the ground or split at the branching crotch?

You might try a chemical paint stripper. I have never used any on a poly finish, but I have had good luck removing old paint with them. Much less elbow grease than sanding or scraping.
