On Oct 24 and 25(Fri & Sat), Klingspor will be having their annual show in Hickory. This will be the 4th year that we have had a presence and the third year that we have been invited to participate.

There are 2 primary reasons, that I would like this year to be the largest and most active we have ever been.
  1. With our new status as a non-profit, primarily educational corporation, we can demonstrate that intent more easily at a show like this than at the website.
  2. Klingspor has been the first and the most supportive retailer of our efforts:
  • They provide us with a real and useful discount program.
  • While all our other advertisers only pay us something, if we purchase through them. Klingspor is paying us a flat fee each quarter for their advertisement. And I promise you, that other than google adsense, we will get more money from than anyone else.
Please remember that this year, we are not there to promote the web site. We are there, to promote and introduce North Carolina Woodworker, Inc. a non-profit corporation formed for the purpose of promoting and educating, woodworking in the state of NC and surrounding areas.
So what will we doing? Well, in many ways that will depend on you. Here's what can do.

Formal presentations
These will done in one of the formal Demo areas provided by Klingspor. These CAN NOT be a demo where you just do your thing and maybe answer some questions. You have to lead your audience through what you are trying to convey. If you are not ready to speak in front of an audience, then this isn't for you. (Unless, you get a partner to do that for you, which may be a great way to do it.) There is another thread for signup and more details.
Demos
These will be done in our dedicated area. You can demonstrate some skill or technique. You can simply do your thing and answer questions from any audience you may have. This is what we have usually done in the past.
Audience Participation.
These will also be done in our dedicated area. Here we try to show an audience member(s) how to do something. For instance, instead of one of us turning a pen, we let an audience member turn a pen under our supervision and guidance. Simple scroll sawing would be another. Beginning a simple carving would another. And I am sure you can all think of other things, that would work.
Display your work and Maybe sell it.
Bring some of your work for display in our area. We have a lot of talent, let's show it.
Website Demos
We will have several computers there and will display our website in all its glory to people. I will arrange for internet Access.
Calendar Sale
Assuming the calendars are ready, I will bring a bunch to sell. Price will be more than the $16.50.
Lunch on both days.
We will have a private lunch in one of the rooms in the center on both Friday & Sunday.
Please fill in the attached poll to let us know if you will be there, even if you just going to look around. This will help us plan the lunches and prepare name badges.

Steve,
Can you post the location of the show and directions to get there? That would be most helpful. I was there last year, but don't remember exactly where it was.

Jim, just click on the Klingspor ad in the upper right corner of the home page and then click of the details link when you get to their website. Directions, maps and timetable can be found there.

Looks like I'll be heading up to the show on Saturday morning around 9am ... and a couple others might join me for the ride ... looking forward to seeing many of you there!

Had a great time (as usual) at the Klingspor Extravaganza. It was nice seeing some many familiar faces again and really enjoyed everything the show had to offer (even the apples!)

Unfortunately ... I had no camera on-hand. But I know someone did!

I will second that. This was the first one for me and the first time I have had a chance to meet many of you face to face. My wife and I had a wonderful time. I did have a camera but was having so much fun I totally forgot to take it out and take pictures. Steve I appreciate you letting my wife have a chance at turning a pen and spending some quality time with the two of us filling in some of my knowledge deficiencies and to Monty I believe it was for allowing us to use your lathe sorry for keeping it tied up. Now if I had only paid more attention to the kit I would have assembled it correctly.

I think you guys may have paved the way for me to get that bigger lathe down the road. On the way home she told me she wanted to learn how to turn bowls.

I guess it's time to start saving the pennies and doing some research.

Thanks to everyone that was there and to Klingspor for putting together the event. I look forward to next years.

OK, now that you have her hooked (interested) in turning. I will send you a pm about a good deal on a lathe close to you

I too had a great time today. It was nice to finally meet Steve and many others and put a face with a screename. I know Katie also had a great time and was a great help in passing out North Carolina Woodworker cards. She had a handful and was walking up to people and just handing them out whether they were in the North Carolina Woodworker area or not.

Thanks for the PM. I think that will open the door to me getting one quicker. I really think she wants to turn bowl and I am all for that. If I can get her hooked that will mean an easier time getting tools and wood on the other hand it might be less shop time. eh maybe not. I guess I will have to find out.

I echo all that has been said. In fact I had suxh a great time I plan to do both days next year. I want to say a big Thank You to Papa Smurf (Steve Coles) who did all the work to plan all the North Carolina Woodworker parts of the show. Those things just don't happen. Once again Steve put everything aside for North Carolina Woodworker.
