Pig Pickin'
Fall gathering in Asheville
Saturday October 11th 2008.

I'll have the gate open by 8:am And lock it by 10pm.
You don't have to come that early or stay that late!
Come together and enjoy some time with your fellow woodworkers.

The food ought to be ready at 1pm.

WNCWA will have their meeting- check their site for time.

We will have some demonstrations and participation activities.
Nothing too strenuous. This is supposed to be FUN.
Hopefully you may learn something along the way.

Directions to the facility are -
I-26 to exit 37 - Long Shoals Road/NC 146.
Turn WEST onto Long Shoals cross the river. (its maybe 100 yards from the interstate).
Drive 1 mile and turn right onto Clayton Road (the first road to the right).
The site is one mile down Clayton Road.
Turn right from Clayton Road into the drive. It will be marked.
I'll send out more information if needed. Please drop a note if I can help you with maps, information, accomodations, or anything else.

I-26 Exit 37 is 3 miles from the Asheville Airport exit, and 6 miles from I-40. Take I-40 to I-26 east.

There is most anything available in the area one might need.
The sites of interest are as varied as your interests.

In the area are some interesting places to visit
- Blue Ridge Parkway
Click here: Virtual Blue Ridge Parkway Guide
- NC Folk Art Center
Click here: Blue Ridge - Folk Art Center
- NC Arboretum
Click here: The North Carolina Arboretum
- WNC Nature Center ( a small zoo of native animals)
Click here: Western North Carolina Nature Center, Red Wolf Breeding Program, Animals in Natural Habitats
- Biltmore House and Gardens
Click here: Visit Biltmore - Biltmore House

Any specific questions or requests, please ask and I'll be happy to see how we can help!
If we can't find it we'll find out who can.

Motels-
Quality Inn 828-684-6688 Long Shoals Road at I-26 - closest one.
(fairly nice place from the times I 've been to calls there.)

Airport Road and I-26 One exit South (3 miles)
Comfort Inn - 828-687-9199
Holiday Inn - 828-684-1213
EconoLodge- 828-684-1200
Hampton Inn - 687-0806

Brevard Road and I-26 One exit North (4 miles)
Super 8 - 828-670-8800
Hampton Inn - 828-667-2022
Fairfield Inn - 828-665-4242
There are MANY options in the area. These are just the closest.
Also if you're local and would like to help....
I like the team concept!!
Please check the staff announcement forum and take the poll of how many will be coming. We're getting ready and looking forward to meeting as many as possible!
Many have said they're coming PLEASE DO- but take the poll to help us out...

Even though we are a long way away, coming from Panama City, Fl. Char and I (and our dog Molly) have decided we are coming as we want to meet all you fine folks. Thanks to David's recommendation we have made reservations at the "Days Inn on Tunnel road in Asheville" for Oct. 10th through the 13th. We will be there and are very much looking forward to meeting as many of you as we can and to seeing your beautiful state. We will probably spend a few days with Chars Son, Daughter-In-Law and Grand Daughter in Fayettville, Tn. first and then come across to Asheville on the 10th. If there is anything between Fayettville. Tn. and Asheville that is a "must see" any input would be welcome.

Coming from Fayetteville, I would look into 2 locations on the way. Chattanooga and Gatlinburg. Gatlinburg I am more familiar with. It is a small mountain town with tons of shops and tourist type locales.
In the area of Gatlinburg are Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. These 3 are on MANY people's list of places to visit before Christmas. Talk about a shopping mecca - if such a thing exists. I know ladies that make the trek religiously. There ae outlet malls galore.
Gatlinburg chamber of commerce has a web site that is full of information.
There are aquariums at both. One has a salt water and the other a fresh water. I can't remember which has which. I guess y'all get your fill of salkt water living where you do
Depends on your interests, but these two places come to mind.
If you like caves, at Sweetwater, just outside of Chattanooga there is the Lost Sea Cave. It has the largest underwater lake found so far, over 14 acres total. We spent the night some 300 feet underground with my son's scout troop. They have open admission for visitors and tours available.
Glad to see you coming!

LOML and I are booked all the Days Inn at the airport for Friday and Saturday nights. They had the best rates of all we checked. If others are coming early maybe we can meet someplace Friday evening.

CaptnA, thanks for all the great information. I forgot to mention that we had been to Gatlinburg a couple of years ago and you are right. It is mostly for shopping but we did have a good time while we were there. The Lost Sea Cave sounds interesting and we may plan to stop there. When traveling we like to stay off freeways as much as possible so we'll be taking the mountain route on US 74. Map Quest says it's a little over 6 hrs. from Fayettville so we will have a little time.

NC Scroller, we would like to get together Friday evening if we get there early enough.

Asheville is blessed with some great resturants. A large selection are concentrated in Downtown. The web will get you a list. There are some great resturants in Hendersonville also and any in Asheville or Hendersonville will have libations. In the vacinity of the Airport, there are the usual Chains with Bar service. One without alcohol but with good food is J&S Cafeteria directly across from the Airport. Eat there, my partners and I get a nickle for each dollar you spend.

I would be available to guide a group to eats and or refreshments since I live within a couple of miles.

CaptnA,
I gave you a tentative response earlier, but put us down for two for the weekend. We've booked at the Quality Inn South for Friday and Saturday nights. Look forward to meeting as many of you as possible. Let us know if you put together a dinner gathering for Friday night. We'd love to join in.
