Bill, thanks for sharing! It's fascinating how the differences in material and culture drive different woodworking techniques.

Very interesting post, Bill!

I suspect that there isn't much in the way of power tools, right? Did you get a chance to go inside and check out the types of wood and finish that they use?

That carving certainly is an awesome piece of sculpture!

Must have been a wonderful experience to visit such a unique shop.

Thanks for sharing the photo's!

Wayne

Wayne,

No chance to stop and visit...pictures were taken from the road as we passed by. Given time constraints I am going to stop on the next trip. I do know they have some power tools in some shops..at least table saws because I did see a couple of them as we went by but for the most part much of the work is done by hand.

Regards,

Bill

Your pics bring back memories.

I picked up some curios at a carver's market in Salima, Malawi (near Lake Malawi) during a work visit to Lilongwe 2 years ago. The craftsmanship was pretty good and the wood was beautiful. All of the offerings were hand carved as there was no electricity there at the time of my visit.

I saw more carvings in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania but was not able to make it to the big carver's market there.

I was visiting leaf processing facilities in Mozambique, Zim, Malawi and Tanzania.

Chuck,

I was Africa for the same reason as you have been in the past...visits to leaf processing facilities. I have been to the market in Salima also but it was about 6 years ago. This time we went south to the lake down near Monkey Bay over a weekend. No stops in Dar this time around, just straight to Morogoro from the plane...

The hand carvings in all the countries are amazing to me...I just do not have the carving skills in me I guess.

Regards,

Bill

Straight off the plane to MFG...man, that's a tough agenda.

I have left the industry about one week ago and am now working as a consultant/contract engineer. I will miss the travel opportunities to Africa and the Oriental market. At any rate I'll certainly miss the people, none better in my opinion.

I have managed to travel to most of the major leaf production areas.

A few of the guys phoned me from Limbe Leaf the day I emailed my resignation notice. Raised a beer or two on my behalf.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing those pictures! I love learning about other cultures and even more so when it overlaps my interests/hobbies!
