This thread is in response to my thread What does the North Carolina Woodworker mean to you http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/f...ean-you-17881/ .

As of 9:30 pm on 10/28/08 this thread had 356 hits, this is in just a little over 30 hours. Now I have another question :

What if North Carolina Woodworker ceased to exist, and how would it affect you ?

Don't think that this can't happen, WE are this website and as such we must try to be good stewards. If we want this site to go forward then we must take the future in our own hands.

Our motto should be 'E Pluribis Unum' (out of many comes one)

Anyway, I enjoy sharing this site with the rest of you and hope to do so well into the future.

It would be a sad day indeed, and I think it would affect a lot of us in a big way.

This would be a mute question if we all follow the thought below

If we want this site to go forward then we must take the future in our own hands.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

In society some things continue, some things end. North Carolina Woodworker will, and should, be one that continues considering the strong following -- many of whom has become friends beyond woodworking. North Carolina Woodworker is like a club to me, though it's not officially. And clubs (no matter what form they materalize as) almost always have this challenge of staying afloat in some times ... but usually, if the foundation is solid it continues (in some scaled back fashion, usually) during the "rough" times. And it is at this time that creative minds have to come together and "make it happen" in a business-like fashion that's repeatable, consistent, stable and financially independent -- the last one being the most difficult because at some time the "angel" (that is, the person who primarily funds it initially) has to scale back and let the baby walk on its own.

Now if North Carolina Woodworker couldn't get the support it needed and failed to exist ... I think I'd work on resurrecting it (either in its previous form or a new -- legal stuff involved now ya know). It takes a village to raise a child, and it will take a many woodworkers to raise the forum.

It would be a VERY VERY sad day and a VERY bad day for WW in NC. I know some of my new found friendships would continue but on a limited basis. A lot of these friendship would never have happened without North Carolina Woodworker and I would hate to even think about how many more new friendships yet to come would be missed without this site.

So what would happen if everyone that was an active user make a dollar donation a month? Or maybe even a five dollar donation a month? That’s not a lot really if you think about it. With everything that Steve has done for us and this site and the fellow moderators. I could go without a soda and bag of chips a couple times a month to ensure the livelihood of North Carolina Woodworker. Steve would never make a mandatory fee for using this site. But should he even have to ask? Or should we follow the example that he showed us for the longest time while he paid out of his own pocket to bring the site life and keep it up and running. I digress....Just a couple thoughts. Have a blessed day my friends.

Speaking for right now it's what is keeping me in touch with the hobby. Between school classwork and real work, shop time for me has been almost nonexistant for the last 2 months and has kept me away from the Extravaganza and a few other activities associated with this great orginization. Even though I have posted very little in this time frame i have been able to read through what's been going on and has helped me feel in touch with the pulse of this community.

I am glad Steve had a vision and like the way Dave put it, and I hope to someday be able to take a bigger role with the Future of this Site.

I sure hope this thread wasn't started becuase of my request for donations. The sudden request was prompted by a cash flow issue rather than solvency.

We are in a transition phase and it will take a while before that changes. But each month is getting us closer.

Will we always need donations? absolutely. Will we have to hound people to get it. I sure hope not. I suspect a reminder once a quarter will do it.

Will every active user donate? No. Nor should they. That is not what we are about. Our services are free of charge. And pressure tactics, implict or explicit should not be allowed. That is why ALL donations are kept secret. Posting that you have donated will result in your post being edited or deleted.

I promise you that a division of our user base into those that donate and those that don't will result in a schism in our community that would hurt our sense of community.

we'll have a lot more about these type of things when we have finished our by-laws.

Well, I must confess there will be an end to my donations, once I know everything there is to know about wood.

Steve,

This thread was by no means started because of your asking for donations, instead it was started to get people thinking about where we are, how we got here, and where we are going. But a saying that my father used to say to me when I was small and hated brushing my teeth comes to mind when I think about this site and the support that it needs,
"Ignore them them and they will go away". I try not to take anything for granted, this site included.

Making people, in general, think is a good thing.

If anyone feels offended by this thread, I am truly sorry. That is not what it was intended to do.

jimmy, I wasn't offended, just unclear. Mostly becuase there were several responses that sort of homed in on donations and/or raising money. So I was probablt reacting to that.

Please all do not misunderstand. I really like the fact that so many of you are concerned that we stay financially healthy and independent. However, I don't want us to create the type of financial atmosphere that we see on a few other websites.

In another vein, discussions like this really help the staff understand what is important to our users/members.
