Name: Jimmy Coull City: Clayton State: NC County: Johnston Join Date: Sep 2006 Age: 49 Avg Visit Freq/Week = 6.34 over 180 days | Exactly what what does North Carolina Woodworker mean to you ? Is it a place for information, or a place to show your projects, a place to meet people and make friends, or for anything else ?
For me this site has been a lifeline, I moved down here from the north (and yes I talk funny ) and knew nobody, we followed a job offer that my wife got and moved the family to a place I had never even visited before.
I was a stay at home dad for two years and am still the primary caregiver while doing some side work, so I had't had a chance to socialize much. I met a friend and he and I joined the TWA in the fall of 2006, but you don't get to be outgoing at those meetings (they are fairly short) and before I could really make friends there I lost my free Tuesday nights (my wife's dance class got moved over to that night) and all contact with other woodworkers. Luckily Rick Cornell had given all new members this website as a good place for woodworkers. For this I am grateful to Rick and the TWA and if I ever get my Tuesday nights back I will join again, especially as that I now know alot of the members through this site.
So even though I joined this site in Sept. 2006 I didn't introduce myself or start posting until much later. I have met some really great people here and look forward to meeting more. I wish that I could name all of the people, but there are too many to name and due to the fact that I have CRS (can't remember s***) syndrome I would probably forget a few. I wish that I could make all of the breakfasts, lunches, dinners, outings, wood runs, etc. , but I can't . But I am grateful for the ones that I have.
So as I have said, besides using this site for information and meeting people it has truly been a lifeline for me to North Carolina and the people of it. I have to whole heartedly thank Steve Coles for having the foresight, means and ba**s to start this site up.
Please feel free to add your thoughts about what North Carolina Woodworker means to you.
Thank you. |

North Carolina Woodworker to be a fantastic source of info.
It has been a great place to meet other people with similar interests.
Also, the people are friendly and very helpful. Just ask, and someone
will have an answer or can point you in the right direction.
I totally agree that Steve had a vision of what a site should be and he
has accomplished more than we could ever have hoped for.
Thank you Steve.

Name: Rob City: Hendersonville State: NC County: Henderson Join Date: Nov 2005 Age: 66 Avg Visit Freq/Week = 6.84 over 180 days | North Carolina Woodworker is all about the great people that join and participate to share their knowledge or ask their questions; to get together when the opportunity arises (like at the Klingspor event this past weekend); to offer up deals on tools or wood and to help get those things transported across the state from past to new owner; to gloat a little when you've bought a new tool (sharing WGD) or completed a special project; and to make new friends both online and in person.
Thanks Jimmy, Archie, DaveO, SteveColes, TracyP, and myriad others who make this a great place to be each and every day. It sure is worth the price of admission and it helps to donate what you can to continue to make it better.

Name: Doug Robinson City: Raleigh State: NC County: Wake Join Date: Jul 2006 Age: 47 Avg Visit Freq/Week = 6.92 over 180 days | Ok I'll bite. I have visited a few woodworking sites before finding this one. None really met my needs. Yes I can find answers to questions in many places. However, a posted answer on the web is a lot like an email to me. Just as I prefer to talk in person or on the phone to emailing, I prefer to get answers in person. There is so much more to learn and for each answer there are many many follow up questions. North Carolina Woodworker gives me the chance to meet others with a similar and dissimilar interest in woodworking. I have taught people and been taught by people.
I have enjoyed finding bargains from people here and have sold my old tools as I have upgraded. I have learned about brands of tools I knew little to nothin' about and have branched in to new areas of wWWing since joining (scrolling is coming, I feel it.)
Most of all North Carolina Woodworker provides a sense of community I have not found elsewhere.
Finally, I had two "best" friends when I found this place. One I have known since we were 9 years old. The other since 19 years old. I now have a 3rd who shall remain nameless, but he has recurring Wood Guy Disease.

Well the acronym means North Carolina Wood Workers, but to me it is Necessary Community of Wood Workers. There are so many great folks here that are willing to share and show others, support in many ways, more than just woodworking, that this group is a necessary part of life. To me, as someone that kinda lurks in the background more than posting and being vocal, I feel that a day without being able to check in and learn something new is like a day without air. I can't live without it.

Members helping out, whether thru donations to the site, being part of a Pony Express run, lending a hand (or a sympathetic ear).

I don't know how else to describe it. Heck you sure can't bottle it. Cathy Skipper pointed me here form another site where a few people thought they ruled the world. I thank Cathy everyday for that.

Name: Trent Mason City: Wrightsville Beach State: NC County: New Hanover Join Date: Feb 2008 Age: 29 Avg Visit Freq/Week = 6.07 over 180 days | DaveO flagged me down from another (nationwide/worldwide) forum. I got on here and immediately noticed that there were more smiley faces (emoticons) than I've ever seen or even knew existed. I started off just asking questions and offering a little bit of my nonsense in the off topic forum. It didn't take long to realize that for a change, these weren't just people typing on the internet under some alias. They were real people, from places I've been to and am familiar with. They were people from where I'm from, who I can really relate to. After that, all of you became a part of me. All of a sudden I was a member of a family, not just an internet forum.
I've had the opportunity to meet some of you all and no matter how old what the age diffence is, or what you believe in or your background, we share a common love of woodworking and none of that other stuff really matters. It's a community that puts all of our differences aside and fucuses on fellowship and support. And those are the things that are so often lost in today's society, but the most important.
Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent. I guess it's all of those political ads on tv/radio. I've been a member here for about 8 months, but you all have been there for me through some of the worst times and now some of the best. This is way more than an internet site. This really is a family.
Cheers,
Trent

Oh yeah, the friendship thing is nice too. And the information sharing. Helping each other. Shop crawls. Lunches. Lumber runs. All that stuff.
But it's really about the tools.
