Thumbs down

Have you noticed how much tool prices has risen in the past 6 months alone? Not to mention the past two to five years ...

I guess that between the price of iron, labor, freight, and other market forces the price of tools -- especially larger tools -- has just gone crazy.

Several tools I've been looking at, or have and just monitor, the price has gone up 15-20% one month to the next. It's rather disgusting.

The only good thing out of the whole deal ... my used tools go up in value since the replacement cost is ridiculous!

It will definitely discourage newcomers to this hobby/business. I guess that is good in some ways and bad in others. Sign of the times I guess.

Ain't just tools! Plywood too!

Bought a sheet of 3/4 (or whatever they call it) tonight at Lowes to build a project in a recent Wood magazine article. (Mobile table for the shop) Dang stuff was $35. AND, when I got the thing home and turned it over (rough side) it has a big split in the top ply.

I know I should have looked, but, you'd think if they're gonna sell it as top quality, it would be.

Lesson learned!!

Despite the hassle to taking it back, I would do just that. I've also learned not to buy BORG plywood except for rough grade needs.

Re the tool prices, they are also impacted by the value of the U.S. Dollar (since most are imported).

It use to be recycling always lost money for cities/counties. Now there is so much money in recycled aluminum, steel, paper, etc… you can make money DRIVING around and grabbing the higher goods from peoples cans. Let alone all the people that break into a house to take piping and wire that was once not worth the effort.
I remember just 8 months ago when I bought some copper pipe how much just 1 pipe was, let alone the other 15-20. I almost got the thinner stuff to save money but I knew that would bit me in the *** later if I did that.
But just means a lot of my current purchases are from craigslist (Grizzly $900 shaper for $450) or wood straight from the sawyers (though I always try to do that J )

This is exactly why when I want a tool I look for the good current price and buy it. I was driving myself nuts trying to wait out a better price only to have them go up, not down. In the vast number of my tool-buying cases, I saved a ton by snapping them up when I wanted them (or had the money...) instead of waiting. I know it's not fun but it is reality.

Boy am I on your side. I ranted about a bandsaw ZCI, made from plastic, costing $11+. Someone actually tried to rationlize the cost. Something about the cost to import it. My thought was make it here and sell it of 39 cents.

Since I know I can not get anything near what my tools are worth I will keep them but my days making large heirloon furniture pieces are over. Maybe not over but few and far between.

I have quit shopping for tools. Well, I have slowed down. State of my savings account from large tool purchases and all the small tool purchases needs to be replenished so I am trying to behave.

I will say I have bought a lot more used stuff than I ever have before and find that I am quite happy with it. Getting near new machinery for 50 percent of retail is a wonderful thing.

Things aren't all that bad. There are still deals to be had.

I just picked up a Shop Fox moulder that's on clearance at various dealers. Got mine new for less than Grizzly is blowing them out for right now.

Don't need it, don't really have the space for it... but now I've got it.

Still need to run out and get a plug for it, but it's all assembled, cleaned up and riding on a new set of Great Lakes casters:

I love the casters, have them on my bandsaw and can't say enough good things about them.
