Does anyone know how to get stuff out of this container (gallon size)

into something smaller, without spilling half the contents? I understand the funnel concept, but unless the funnel opening is bucket size, stuff spills everywhere.

Bas, there is a secret! Pour it backwards. When you tip it forward, the part with the cap should be on the higher side. Really - someone told me this and it was like a revelation .

If you're planning on emptying the entire gallon can, you can pop a vent hole in the top opposite of the spout and that will greatly reduce the gulging. I would attempt to pour the whole gallon into a container like a pitcher that would make it easier to then pour into smaller containers.
What you do spill will dry very quickly

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Holy Sassafras, Beech and Mahogany Batman! This actually works! Pete, I don't care what DaveO says, you're OK in my book! I managed to fill one of my little jars and only spilled a drop!

You are now officially the smartest man on North Carolina Woodworker.

(Now why can't they print that on the can? )

It does work? I have been struggling with this for some time myself. Not just with DNA either. BLO, mineral spirits, turpentine, etc, etc, etc.

That tip works on 5 gallon buckets of hydraulic oil too! Also, motor oil jugs with the cap on one side.

I'm not sure how smart I am - I spilled it all over the place until someone told me this super woodworking secret. They don't print it on the can because I think you have to be in the club before you hear it though.

Pete: Did the guy who showed you this also show you how to decant paint/varnish out of a full gallon can into a smaller container using just the stir stick? Sure cuts down on the mess. Some ol' painters ain't as dumb as plumbers and carpenters would have you believe.

WARNING - Be extremely careful about what you use to make the hole. Nothing electric or likely to produce a spark.

I will have to try the "backwards" technique. What I do is squeeze the sides as I pour a little, stand it back up and release the sides pressure and it keeps it from doing the "glub, glub". I will have to take a picture of the cabinet of solvents and you will probably get a chuckle; most of the cans are bent in slightly from me doing this.

Bas, just learn to pour shine and you will learn not to spill a drop.

I didn't know about the completely backwards trick, but my Dad always used to hold the can on its side and pour, that works too.
