Is it possible for super glue to not be super any more? It wouldn't even stick my fingers together.
What should I do to keep this from happening again?

I'm picking up some this weekend. It's been stored in the basement sealed up. I've only had it since April, but that's not saying it didn't sit on the shelves for a while before I bought it.

Wow, that's definitely beyond shelf life then. As David mentioned, a fridge is best, but a cool, dark place should ensure it lasts at least a year, usually two. Heat and moisture are the enemies.
My workshop is in the basement, so temperature is not a problem. I avoid moisture by storing the glue bottle inside an empty #20 biscuit container.
That reminds me, I used up the last of my CA glue.....and I'm out of epoxy too....

My shop is in the basement as well, so I wouldn't think temp/moisture had anything to do with it. The basement is fully conditioned.

Isn't there a better way to test that stuff than attempting to stick your fingers together? I mean, what if it had been GOOD????

I was trying to glue the tubes in a pen blank when I got some on my fingers and my fingers didn't stick to anything else or each other. I wasn't an attempt to turn two fingers into one.

After it is used, the bottle should be stored in closed container with a dessicant. If you store it refrigerated after it is initially opened, the warming process during each use will encourage condensation and thus ruin the glue.
BTW most glues have an expiration date on it (usually on the bottom of the bottle) Originally Posted by DavidF They do say storing it in the fridge will add to the life considerably, but all things come to an end.... |

What do you use for a dessicant in your shop? Where's the best place to find it locally?

Name: John City: Garner State: NC County: Wake Join Date: Jan 2006 Avg Visit Freq/Week = 6.22 over 180 days | I got a "starter kit" from Hartville. I believe Klingspor also carries the kit. It has glue, excellerator and various tips along with a plastic jar and a dessicant pack. Microwave the pack for 2 minutes before use and whenever the color changes from blue to pink. Store the cooled pack along with the glue (not the excellerator) in the jar.
If you have the silica packs found with new tools (Those that say "Do not eat this") those can also be used and you can do the same thing on the cheap. The only problem is that you do not know when they are used up.
Since you need to get glue anyway, the kit may be the way to go for you. Originally Posted by ptt49er What do you use for a dessicant in your shop? Where's the best place to find it locally? |
