I've got a bottle of thin CA glue that doesn't seem to be sticky anymore. I can't remember who made it, but I haven't had it all that long.

Is it possible for super glue to not be super any more? It wouldn't even stick my fingers together.

What should I do to keep this from happening again?

They do say storing it in the fridge will add to the life considerably, but all things come to an end....

Hmmmm... I have some that is a year old and still super. Have you tried to spray some accelerator on it?

I don't have any accelerator on hand. I'm picking up some this weekend. It's been stored in the basement sealed up. I've only had it since April, but that's not saying it didn't sit on the shelves for a while before I bought it.

Wow, that's definitely beyond shelf life then. As David mentioned, a fridge is best, but a cool, dark place should ensure it lasts at least a year, usually two. Heat and moisture are the enemies.

My workshop is in the basement, so temperature is not a problem. I avoid moisture by storing the glue bottle inside an empty #20 biscuit container.

That reminds me, I used up the last of my CA glue.....and I'm out of epoxy too....

What a sad thing Bas!! You'd better restock! and QUICK!

My shop is in the basement as well, so I wouldn't think temp/moisture had anything to do with it. The basement is fully conditioned.

Of course, no telling where and how long it was stored before it made its way into your shop....

Uh - just wondering...

Isn't there a better way to test that stuff than attempting to stick your fingers together? I mean, what if it had been GOOD????

LOL! I wasn't attempting to stick my fingers together. I was trying to glue the tubes in a pen blank when I got some on my fingers and my fingers didn't stick to anything else or each other. I wasn't an attempt to turn two fingers into one.

Super glue should only be stored refrigerated BEFORE it is opened for the first time only. After it is used, the bottle should be stored in closed container with a dessicant. If you store it refrigerated after it is initially opened, the warming process during each use will encourage condensation and thus ruin the glue.

BTW most glues have an expiration date on it (usually on the bottom of the bottle)

What do you use for a dessicant in your shop? Where's the best place to find it locally?

I got a "starter kit" from Hartville. I believe Klingspor also carries the kit. It has glue, excellerator and various tips along with a plastic jar and a dessicant pack. Microwave the pack for 2 minutes before use and whenever the color changes from blue to pink. Store the cooled pack along with the glue (not the excellerator) in the jar.

If you have the silica packs found with new tools (Those that say "Do not eat this") those can also be used and you can do the same thing on the cheap. The only problem is that you do not know when they are used up.

Since you need to get glue anyway, the kit may be the way to go for you.
