Angry

A few years ago this pine lost it's top to a storm. I've been meaning to drop it, but it leaned opposite the way I wanted to fell it. Last nights storms really enhanced that lean

Off the back deck -

A clearer view...except for the rain drops -

Of all the trees in the forest why did I have to run into you. One perfect hanger -

It can't get much worse than this. I know I should have dropped it after it lost it's top, but I figured it would stand and make a nice home for some critters.
Now I would like to take it down as it is crossing the pathway we use to get to the "back-40".
Any tips or advice out there????

Dave

First thing that comes to my mind is undercut it just above the break, but the top can still go anywhere. Do you have anything substantial to tie it off to? An extension ladder & about 50-100 feet of good rope & a stout tree to tie off to would help. I could run out & take a look at it.

Dave, anyway you can get a heavy duty come-a-long, truck or heavy tractor and pull it from the butt end?

Dave -

Can you spell 'Professional' 'with insurance'? No way I would touch that with it leaning directly toward the house.

Good Luck!!!

I'm not sure what's holding it up, but my next door neighbor had that happen ( it ended up aiming at where I park my truck) and under cut it as Jerry suggested. The tree eventualy had the bottom swing towards the top and the next cut caused it to fall where he wanted it too.

Good Luck,
Jimmy

George, luckily it is no where near the house. It would have to jump the stump about 50' to even come close. Still not something that I feel good about dropping.
Maybe the next round of storms will more it's support tree enough to allow it to fall

I am liking this idea. If I had a come-a-long, I could anchor it to another tree and just winch it off the stump. It don't matter where it falls (as long as it's not on me) as there is nothing to damage out there.

DaveO:

Please be careful with that one. There is a reason they call those Widow-makers or Dead-falls.

Dave, I have two come-a-longs which were given to me. I certainly don't need both of them. If you are interested, I will give you one of them. Let me know. I will be in Raleigh tomorrow and Friday.

dave I have a comalong and a 50' x 1/2" cable if you got some rope to throw over it you could pull the cable up there and pull it over. or maybe hook the cable to your truch and skip the comalong. if you need it give a shout. I aint a lot of help with this finger on the mend but I can supervise! got a chainsaw too if that helps.

Oh the generosity of folks on this site is impressive. But y'all are trying to keep me from buying a new tool. A come-a-long could be handy to have , it might help me the next time I get stuck in a bucket of peach paint

If you can get a line high enough, you may be able to pull the top over and let it drop. If you undercut it it "should" roll to the left from the perspective of that last pic. I would try pulling the top over first. If you have to cut it, it should drop with no problem, but they can do some funny things sometimes. Be careful!

Having used my truck to de-hang a dead maple recently I concur with Scott's idea. BTW, the root burl and a few trunk sections are sealed and air drying in my shed.

Wish we were close enough to help. Unless the picture isn't showing something that doesn't look too bad.
A good rope a couple of knots to make a windlass (sp) and you could move it where you want it.
