Perhaps y'all living elsewhere in the state received one also, I just dunno. Anyhow, on the back page is an offering for the 80th Anniversary Limited Edition Products tool chest. A limited production run of only 200, and for the discounted price of just $499.99 (regularly listed at $740.00.) So here's my confusion...
Since Woodcraft is a company specializing primarily in selling tools, machinery and similar support products to people who use the tools, machinery and support products to MAKE THINGS, who do y'all think is in the market to lay out enough $$$ to purchase a Jet 14" bandsaw that would opt for a factory made cherry toolbox instead. Now, I don't doubt they'll sell some, but I for one would be ashamed to buy one and upset if someone I love felt she needed to buy it for me. I'm sure it's much nicer than I could ever make, but I really enjoy the little poplar one I made from plans I got somewhere. I learned a lot making and finishing my little tool box, and I'm a darned sight prouder than if I had purchased the 80th Anniversary special. $500 will buy a lot of 6" acrylic tube.
And more: could someone enlighten me about the "Gerstner's legendary tongue and groove construction?" What's the legend surrounding this ancient technique of joining boards?
Now, y'all 'scuse me while I go order one of those $35 story sticks to use while I make more jigs and fixtures, since I don't need a toolbox any more. Says you don't need no stinkin' glasses to use it, so I'm all in with that.

Now I wouldn't buy it, but there are some people that collect just about anything. I'm sure there are people out there with that bandsaw you're talking about, that will never hardly use it. They make a coat rack out of it, just like exercise equiptment. There is no telling what pwople will buy, P.T.Barnum said " There's a sucker born evey minute".

Maybe the woodworker who buys a toolbox is into a different kind of woodworking. Maybe that woodworker only does turning... and doesn't build, or enjoy building boxes.

Ray That box is actually a machinists chest and is probably allergic to turning tools .

I have wondered the same thing actually. Buying a workbench seems a little more understandable as you may not have the time tooling or equipment to make it, but a tool box seems a bit odd. To each his own. |

Have any photos of the Gerstner. I have a think for "old" woodworking items.

I was one and had one (bought it for $25 off a retiring guy, but that was in 1966 and I was only 18, so to me it was a lot of bucks.) Sam's Club has them on sale at a more reasonable price occasionally if you really need something to put your precision measuring tools in.

Jimmy Back to the question - Jimmy got it with his first shot. There are people who buy woodworking tools, have beautiful shops and don't build anything. They are "collectors" and are doing their part to support the economy.

I can never quite commit the same enthusiasm to a shop project and therefore it nevers turns out as good as I would have liked. I haven't built any shop cabinets and I bought my bench, does that make me a bad person or even a bad woodworker????
Now not to open a can of worms here, but I tend to feel that people who are constantly building shop cabinets, jigs fixtures etc are really saying that they are not quite ready to commit to building something suitable for the outside world to look at - no offense to anybody what so ever.
