Does anyone subscribe to a woodworking newsgroup that they think is worthwhile?

Thanks

If you mean a Public usenet newsgroup, well I have never bothered. As far as I can see usenet, IMHO, has become nothing but cesspool of spam and porn.

There are probably many usenet groups that are hosted and controlled tightly by some entity. For instance, Microsoft has its own usenet server and hosts many groups for developers and support.

Now if you mean something like Yahoo and Google groups there are probably many, but I can's speak to that.

The original newsgroup rec.woodworking still has some interesting items, but it has a lot of spam and off-topic "discussions". Almost all newsgroup/ forum-style discussions take place on sites like North Carolina Woodworker these days. Lots of good ones to choose from - woodnet.net, woodworking.org, bt3central.com, sawmillcreek.org, lumberjocks.com. Then there are several 'specialty' sites such as thewoodwhisperer.com, shoptours.org and newwoodworker.com. Plus several thousand blogs and private web sites.

You can spend all day on-line and never do any real woodworking

Which ones are worthwhile? It depends on what you're looking for. Bt3central is great for bargain alerts, lots of cheap people there! (my kind...) The Wood Whisperer has some great how-to's and more in-depth advice. Newwoodworker is all about tool reviews. Sawmillcreek has good info, but the atmosphere isn't always that friendly. Lumberjocks has great projects on display. Something for everyone!

As Steve said, the newsgroups have become really loaded with chaff. Bas has some good suggestions to which I would add the sites belonging to our members. I have begun planning my workbench construction and found helpful info on Bas's site and also Monty's.

I spend too much time on this website as it is, that I don't even bother looking elsewhere. If I had more time for computers I would spend more time here or cruising CL for good deals for me and the members.

Sorry that I'm not much help.

Jimmy

I'll bet it is a bandwidth issue for Susan. Are you still on dial up where you are??? I think you had once mentioned that you no longer have to import daylight, but....

Yep. Still dial-up and will be for my expected lifetime. I use to participate in many NewsGroups when I was a network engineer dealing with computing and network topics. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good one for woodworkers. I already get more than 300 spam messages a day and don't need any more, however.

Thanks all.
