Yesterday (Friday) was a looooong day. Drove down to Atlanta in the morning and returned to Charlotte that night. Worth it? Heck yeah.

Before hitting IWF we (Jon "TurnStyle", Tom Strigus, and I) stopped by Highland Hardware ... a couple miles from downtown Atlanta. I've been to their website many times, but figured I needed to see it first hand. A pretty neat place and lots of "toys".

From there, we headed to IWF. Since we only had one day, there is NO WAY we could see the whole show, but we did what we could to see what we wanted. I'd guess we got about 33% coverage in a day ... just to give you an idea of how freaking HUGE this show is.

A couple of the highlights in my trip ...

Got to meet and talk with "The Wood Whisperer" Marc Spagnuolo and his wife a fair amount. He's a really nice guy and we just talked shop, tools and the web. He's enjoyed success in several areas and has turned his passion into his business ... lucky dog!

Found a company (Performance Abrasives) that sells sandpaper, and these neat little sanding "balls" that would be awesome for a bowl inside ... and it's cheaper than the Festool "high price" paper at what was claimed to be the same quality. They gave me some samples ... can't wait to put them to the test.

Also got to talk with Laguna and get some questions answered, discuss tablesaws with Sawstop, talk with Rick Barber at SlickSaw, and meet Gary Blum from Blum Tool Co (after being introduced by PeteQuad)

And I got to see LOTS of tools ...

See the rest of my photos (not too many though) at http://www.ncwoodworker.net/pp/showg...307&ppuser=816

Come on Jeremy cough it up, what did you get in Atlanta ? You were too close to too many toys to not buy anything. I know that I wouldn't be able to get out of Highland without dropping a nice chunk of cash.

Awesome! I've now shaken hands with someone who's shaken hands with the Marc Spagnuolo! Very cool. Nice picture, the Wood Whisperer and the Wood Wrangler together.

How much was the Kapex T-Shirt? $400?

And what did you buy man, spill the beans!!!

Bas,

Don't forget six degrees of seperation for anybody to come in contact with anybody else. But this is only once removed, so you are indeed a lucky man.

I saw your picture of the new Unisaw. Or they really gonna ship it.I don't think Delta has shipped anything new in over a year.

Who really knows? No word of if, or when, at the show ... I was actually expecting great demos of the new capabilities, but every time I walked by it there was no one in sight ... not even people looking at it. Not a good sign.

As for the rest of you ... me buy something? Na ...

So you have succumbed to the dark side. Festool. It is a long deep slope and you are always wanting more. It is woodguy disease at its worst.

Na, I'm just messing around ... I'm not parting with $1,300 on that tool when I want so many others!

The shirt was actually free for just filling out a quiz about their products ... I'm cheap, I was getting that free shirt!

No kidding! My mortises look cleaner, my glue-ups are less stressful, my workshop is bigger - it's a miracle! I'd be cutting dovetails by hand already if Jeremy had managed to shake hands with David Marks!

I wrote a big email with all my notes yesterday and pressed the wrong button, so I lost it . I survived Friday barely, but after today I am really shot. I can barely walk anymore .

It was fun though. I would have left early today, except the Earlex guy told me if I waited around until 4 I could take his display on home, with an extra tip ,for $200 (stealth gloat ).

The Freud guys offered me a fully loaded router table with a 3 1/4HP router for $450, but my feet hurt too much to carry anymore and I didn't really want to spend more money. It was hard to pass up though.

Wednesday morning, Scott Phillips was hawking new Uni when we were there. Looks interesting, but will ship in 2009. Blade mech. moves up and down on ways like a jointer. Both hand wheels are on the front. Of course it has a removable riving knife. Just didn't have that classic Uni look though- IMHO Looked more like a Saw Stop on steroids.

Glad to hear someone was there giving it attention. I figured it must have had someone to "dog and pony show" it.

I guess my impression of the overall look was a bit different though. I though it looked a bit dated already with the thin-style base instead of the fuller, curvier base like the Powermatic and SawStop. The base of the saw was a bit wimpy looking IMHO.

However, looks aside ... nice features, good design, and a great potential. We'll see how it arrives to the market (what quality standards they live up to)

Thanks for the review. It looks like you had fun too.
I actually like the new Unisaw features and looks. I onder how it will be priced. not that I care since I won't be replacing my saw any time soon. I would also want it to have a couple of years to see if there are any issues.
