David,

I was able to run it sooner than I thought. The minimum you would want to go with is 6 - 4' 2 lamp fixtures (T8 lamps 4100K or 5000K, electronic ballasts). If you have 2 rows and 3 columns, as shown below, start the center of your first fixture 5' off the wall and the center of the fixture in the next column at 10' from the center of the first. The first column would begin 3'4" off the wall and the other fixtures would be spaced 6'8 apart. This would give you 50 foot candles on average.

The ideal setup would be 9 fixtures 3 rows by 3 columns starting 3'4" off the wall and 6'8" on center. This will give you an average of 90 foot candles.

That's great Steve, I'll look at doing that, just need to buy 5 more fittings!

Sweet work Steve. That was a great offer.

BTW for the new forum members who might be reading this we are about to run the first Sculptural Rocking Chair course. The first class of course is booked, but a second class should be worked in to fall right in behind. It will start in May and will be open to 4 students just as the first class so just keep it in the back of your heads. Feel free to PM with requests for other classes. If we have interest from a few members for a 1 day class I'll work it into the schedule.

Thanks,

John

Okay, when I did my main shop area that is 15'6" x 25'5", I bought five 2'x4' four-bulb T-8 (32W) Troffers and placed them in an "X" pattern (center is over my tablesaw) and in my assembly/work bench/lathe/finishing area that is 12'6" x 32', I put three of the same evenly spaced down the axis and placed 2-bulb 4' shop lights over benches and lathe. All the 2'x4' fixtures are oriented parallel to shorter wall and hung at 7'6" off floor. Walls & ceiling currently unfinished (exposed pink fiberglass insulation). Illumination seems fine. I can give you more precise spacing measurements if needed.

Thanks for the offer. I will gladly take you up on this. My shop is my double garage. Sheet rocked, 20' X 20' & 9' ceilings. Painted white but I have a lot of stuff on the walls so there is not much reflecting. Concrete floor.

I just got two fixtures from Pete (thank you) that are 8 48" bulbs. I will have to change the ballast to a 120 system. I have 6 two bulb lights that I can also rearrange.

Other issues are, where is the cheapest place to buy the ballast, I need 8? Also I have a supply of "cool while" bulbs that I want to use as I have already purchased them.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The Crosswinds Marina is at the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area right off of 64.

Ah, I got confused about the address and the mention of Apex - Stoneville and Virginia, southern.

I am now embroiled in the latest project, that will consume all shop/spare time, but once that's done I will certainly take you up on the offer of "an introduction to the scroll saw" what sort of things does your wife make? don't forget the club mantra - No pics, didn't happen

DavidF,
Jorder lake is in Chatham county but they changed the zip code to 27523 on the east side and send all the mail from Apex. We are 1/2 mile north on 1008 on the left. Crosswind Marina is not really part of the State Recreation Area, it is the only private business on the lake, but the land belongs to the Federal government.

My wife does a lot of intarsia and fret work on her scroll saws. No good camera yet.
