Boy, I really hate that's on the 12th. I have an obligation in Anderson in the afternoon.

Best bet for me would be on a one - one basis with a specific project in mind.

Things I want to learn:
Marquetry - veneer and scroll saw.
David, you are a lot closer than WG, so it looks like you just found yourself an apprentice
Sign me up for hand plane and tool sharpening.
And what do I have to offer
I could bring a coupla Chimay beers (Belgian 9%) for after session

Clowman,

If you're headed to Hickory on the 12th you may want to stop by Woodworkers Supply in Graham. They are having a Veterans Day Sale (scratch & dent, but most stuff will go on Friday am; tool reps, donuts & coffee; and 10% off Woodtek products). And if you give them a call to get on mail list they may send you a $10 off coupon

Hope you make it to the turning class.

WG,
Dang, it was genuinely nice of you to offer the special rates and share your skills. Gotta wonder, is it the mountain air--the water

Appreciatively,
Sapwood

Are you going to be teaching any more of the advanced pen turning classes? I can't be there on the 12th.

Wow, everyone that is just awesome. This is exactly what this site should be about. I for one can't teach much of anything besides mistake making...advanced level. Steve, if you want to move up a notch, you could take my classes. But I would be very interested in getting together with some of ya'll and trying to learn how to make less of my trademarked skill. I've got some fairly busy weekends coming up, so I don't think I can do anything right now. But after the holidays (many project to make in the next couple weeks) wind down I would be up for something. Dave

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Absolutely Cathy. We'll do it again soon in my shop instead of at Klingspore's. Actually the class is easier to teach in my shop. I don't have to transport so much to do it.

See ya,

John

Well we had the first of the club "mentor" visits last night. I entertained Sapwood and Cloudancer at my shop for a session of "Intro to sharpening" a treatise on tuning hand planes/chisels and a session on the hand scraper. We kept it all very civilized by starting the evening with burgers and A (one) beer before going off to the shop. We had a look at some of the tools that the lads bought and discussed all and sundry about setting them up. I demo'ed my method of taking a blade from scrap yard to useable. We talked about bevel angles and angle guides etc. Moving on to scrapers, the guys felt the pain of trying to get everything to come together to get this wonderful tool working correctly - "hands on" for them both to get a feel and they made shavings well done. Ended on a quick run down of drill sharpening. We finished at 11.30 -5 hrs after we started!! Time for a last beer, a very special Belgian beer courtesy of Sapwood. Thanks guys for bringing the chip, dips and beer. I had a good time - I hope you did too. Sapwood took pictures so I hope we shall see those soon.

How sharp are the blades? Were they able to shave off the hair from
the fore-arm?
